According to the 1932 Disney movie, their names are Dopey, Doc, Bashful, Sneezy, Happy, Grumpy, and Sleepy. Fun fact: there was a 1912 Broadway play in which the dwarves were named Blick, Flick, Glick, Snick, Plick, Whick and Quee. Probably good that Disney made some changes!

Some ideas to get you started but by no means limitations:
Happy - a romance (happily ever after), a book that makes you happy
Grumpy - grumpy x sunshine romance, a book with a grumpy character
Sleepy - characters with sleep issues (ie. Insomnia, Stay Awake)
Sneezy - a book with characters with allergies or who are sick,
Dopey - a silly or comedic character, something like the Jeeves and Wooster series, a character who struggles with drugs or addiction
Bashful - a book with a very shy/introverted character
Doc - character who is a doctor, or has a PhD or is a doctorate candidate

ATY Listopia https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

What are you reading and how does it connect to your dwarf of choice?

Thomas I’m taking a slight stretch I’m thinking doc as in doctor so Do No Harm which I admit is debatable because surgeons aren’t called doctor but given they have the same qualifications I’m saying it counts

Jillian | 2873 comments In the US, surgeons are called doctors. It would not seem like a twist to those of us in US. I had to look up why it was a stretch for you.

I believe Australia are phasing it out too, I believe even in Britain surgeons are regarding as doctors for most pourposes, same training and qualifications

LeahS | 1359 comments I'm reading The Pear Field. It's set in a grim orphanage in Tbisili for children with learning difficulties, called by locals 'The School for Idiots'. A newly adult pupil tries to help a younger boy escape. I am using this for 'Dopey'; I suspect the characters are anything but.

For my second go I am reading My Year of Rest and Relaxation for 'Sleepy'.

I thought this was Henry Marsh's memoir and I was about to say he refers to himself as Dr, so it's not stretching at all. I never really understood the not using the Dr title if they specialise in surgery, you surely want the reassurance that your surgeon is an actual doctor?!

It’s a n old tradition from a long time ago surgeons today have as much medical training as any other doctor ( more in some cases)

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments I vividly recall being traumatized by the funeral scene in the movie as a child so this prompt made my brain make connections with the poison apple the wicked witch gave Snow White. My book choice is The Poison Song by Jen Williams.

Here’s the funeral scene, if anyone is curious - https://youtu.be/3aK6l-jm83E?si=8i4fd...

message 10: by Mary (new)

Mary | 123 comments Ok help me-I just saw "Take my hand" as on the listopia. How is this related to the dwarf's names? (And just say spoiler if it would ruin it and then don't tell me).

message 11: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3839 comments I plan to read a book with a doctor - A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra. I feel like this is one prediction I will keep!

message 12: by Mary (new)

Mary | 123 comments oh sorry- i read the description more and realized "dr"

message 14: by Marie (new)

Marie | 1060 comments I took the easy option for this, I've gone for So Happy for You by Celia Laskey.

message 15: by Phil (new)

Phil | 126 comments Dwarf Sleepy is my guy. I plan to read "The Little Sleep" by Paul Tremblay where the main character suffers from narcolepsy

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 246 comments not many choices on my current TBR for this one but could pick one of these:
Sleeping Beauties
The Happy Couple
Doctor Sleep

message 17: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 99 comments I'm planning to read A Man Called Ove. I chose it because the Goodreads paragraph about the book describes the main character as grumpy and some of my favourite Booktubers have read it. It will be my first book by Frederick Backman.

Tracy | 2978 comments Hayley wrote: "I'm planning to read A Man Called Ove. I chose it because the Goodreads paragraph about the book describes the main character as grumpy and some of my favourite Booktubers have read..."

I hope you enjoy this! I haven't read THIS Fredrik Backman (because I saw the movie - the European one, not the new American/Tom Hanks version), but I've read several other Fredrik Backman books and loved them - he's one of my favorite authors :)

message 19: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 2978 comments I'm planning on reading Time Shelter by Georgi Gospodinov because the protagonist represents himself as a doctor of sorts — he runs a clinic for Alzheimer's patients. This may be a bit of a stretch, but I'm ok with that as I normally don't stretch at all. It is translated from Bulgarian.

If for some reason this doesn't work out I'll read An Unnecessary Woman by Rabih Alameddine — the protagonist is very shy/bashful.

message 20: by SadieReadsAgain (new)

SadieReadsAgain (sadiestartsagain) | 452 comments I've got an option for each dwarf:

- Happy - Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson
- Grumpy - Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout
- Sleepy - Dream of Belonging: My Years in Postwar Poland by Janina Bauman
- Sneezy - The Illness Lesson by Clare Beams
- Dopey - Candy by Luke Davies
- Bashful - This is Not About Me by Janice Galloway
- Doc - This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay

message 21: by John (new)

John Warner (jwarner6comcastnet) | 173 comments For Sleepy, I would recommend The Sleepwalker by Chris Bohjalian. It is a psychological thriller which takes somambulism to a new level.

message 22: by Denise (new)

Denise | 524 comments I read Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. All of the dwarves are covered at various times in the book....characters are Happy, Sleepy or Grumpy; Beth is shy (Bashful); Laurie often acts Dopey; a Doc visits Beth who is ill; several characters catch cold (Sneezy)

Duh! I was afraid someone was thinking Dopey for the special needs kid, which would be a bit disturbing.

message 29: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 423 comments I just finished Clockwork Boys and The Wonder Engine. The main character sneezes. A lot. Her allergies are a major plot point from the first chapter to the last. I've never identified with a character more.

message 30: by Yesica (last edited Feb 29, 2024 04:09AM) (new)

Yesica (yesster) | 38 comments Oh no! Not Dopey! I paired it with "happy" as there´s a lot of talk about happiness in the book.
Just finished it, solid 4 stars for me.

It is a great book and goes perfect with grumpy. That book made me discover Fredrick Backman and now he is one of my favorite authors. Hope you enjoy it!

J Austill | 1116 comments I'm reading Fight Club for this one (Sleepy).

Guylian | 90 comments To honor Dopey (a silly or comedic character) I read Good Material by Dolly Alderton by Dolly Alderton, a book about a comedian.

message 35: by Severina (new)

Severina | 395 comments I read Clockwork Boys by T. Kingfisher. The main character, Slate, gets an overwhelming scent of rosemary and starts sneezing whenever her magic wants to warn her of something, so much so that there's a running gag of another character buying handkerchiefs in bulk so that he always has one for her. :)

lexiskat | 78 comments The book I chose for this prompt Before I Let Go (Skyland, #1) by Kennedy Ryan

Short and sweet review: 3.5
This was my 2nd attempt at this book. I enjoyed this book. A love story like this just doesn't exist. I love how he didn't give up on his family and one true love.

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon ✔ - 16Mar24
Everything, Everything – Nicola Yoon – 3.5***
This YA romance had some significant serious issues to discuss. I really liked Maddy, who’s intelligent and mostly serene. Olly is more complex and guarded, which is understandable given his family situation. Can love (even teenage love) conquer all? Yoon certainly makes a good case.

message 39: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I read Happy Place for this one. The character was also becoming a doctor in the book so fits almost two of the dwarfs. The book was pretty good. I rated it 4 stars but that is probably rounded up from a 3.5.

message 40: by Robin H-R (new)

Robin H-R Holmes Richardson (acetax) | 956 comments I read:
The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters

BIO: Related to at least two of the dwarfs - Cure = Doc, Dreaming = Sleepy
REJECT: A book involving magical realism

Finished: 04/28/2024
Rating: 4 stars

YA Historical fantasy set in 1900 Portland Oregon. Characters include a dentist (Doc), his daughter (Sleepy), and a hypnotist.

Samantha | 1562 comments I read Christa Comes Out of Her Shell. I thought based on the tile Christa might be bashful and based on the book description she might be grumpy. She was a bit of both but she was also a doctor (PHD)

message 43: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1486 comments I read Red Dust Running by Anita Heiss for this prompt. It's a sweet romance. I am not a romance reader, but I didn't mind this one. It was nice.

message 44: by LeahS (last edited Jun 09, 2024 11:33PM) (new)

LeahS | 1359 comments I read The Pear Field, set in a children's home in Tbilisi. The children know that the locals call this home 'The school for idiots', and I related this slur to Dopey - another slur word. The book doesn't focus on education, of which there is very little. The home seemed to have functioned in Soviet times, but now is impoverished and really a holding pen; many of the children, whether they have difficulties or not, have simply been abandoned or semi-abandoned there by their parents. There is kindness, neglect and abuse. The book centres on an ex resident who has nowhere else to go, and her friendship with a younger boy who has the possibility of adoption abroad. It is a short but strong book, a difficult but worthwhile read.

I also read The Sleep Watcher, a strange, beautiful, sad book. Through the device of a teenager who leaves her body while asleep, the book shows how people subconsciously notice problems in relationships and families, which lie underneath the surface. Obviously, used for 'Sleepy'!
