Six of Crows ( the title still makes no sense to me) is a heist story set in fantasy port city called Ketterdam. Many of the characters arrived in the city as poor kids or indentured servants, and some have magical powers. I really enjoyed learning about all the characters. Kaz is a young criminal with a gang of thieves and a gambling club. He is hired by a member of the city council to pull off a major heist. There is a deadly new drug that enhances magical powers to unthinkable levels, and they need to put a stop to it. He puts together a diverse team, and has to help get someone out of jail first. The heist goes through many stages. It’s exciting at times, but it gets overly complicated, as happens with most heist stories I guess. It was hard to picture how they got from one place to the next. The power of the story (for me) comes from each character’s back story, and the relationships among them. I liked hearing the story from many different perspectives. I didn’t read the authors previous books in the “Grisha-verse”, but I still enjoyed that part of their histories.
I was really enjoying the book and I thought it would be a 4 star book. My 3 star rating reflects how disappointed I was by the ending. There were a lot of twists, turns and surprises, but too many things (and people) were still left hanging at the end. (view spoiler)[ It seemed at one point that there were still magical attackers right in front of them (and in the air), but they moved on to discuss the next issue. (hide spoiler)] I want to know what happened to the two female characters I liked so much, but I’m going to resist the urge to get the next book to find out. 16 hours of listening is long enough.
