Hannah | 3301 comments I picked this book up from the library having read and enjoyed The Dictionary of Lost Words. This book follows Peggy, her twin Maude and their friends as they work in the bookbindery at Oxford University Press when the men are called up in WW1. In addition to her work, Peggy looks after Maude, volunteers as a reader for injured service men, and has dreams to attend Oxford University as a student. Through Peggy we see just how limited women were to certain roles seen as acceptable by society, and how the war provided them with the opportunity to change this. This book has many subplots to it, including the arrival of many Belgian refugees to England, the worlds opened up to women of a higher class, and women seeking the vote, and the arrival of influenza to British shores. The writing style meant that it was easy to feel as though I was there with the characters. Whilst the book was a bit slow-moving at times and there was great sadness for some of the characters, I liked how the women in the book cared for and supported each other, and pushed each other to fulfil their potential and to not give up on their dreams.
