The selection for December 2023 BOTM is The Warden by Anthony Trollope

Has anyone started reading this? The holidays have kept me busy. Enjoy Reading, 📚

Helene | 9 comments I just signed up for this book on the app Serial Reader, so I'm starting today. I've heard good things about this one. It's also a selection for the Close Reads podcast for 2024, so I look forward to that discussion, too, when it happens. Happy reading, everyone!

Larry Hall | 123 comments I have and am a little more than half through. so far a typical slow beginning and lots of building of character and background. I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far and the story does continue to build so stick with it and you will be rewarded with a intriguing story with many layers

Larry Hall | 123 comments Not a lot of discussion on this one. I Finished this and here are my thoughts.
A study in doing what's right, but also a lesson in good intentions don't always mean good results. This was my second Trollope and the introduction to the Chronicle of Barsetshire series that I have wanted to read since reading and loving "He Knew He Was Right". This was a much shorter story but just as involved as his much longer novel.

Susan | 10 comments So far a slow start for me - a lot of plodding. I was frustrated at the unwillingness of the old men to defend the Warden. But it may change!

Larry Hall | 123 comments yes Susan I find most Victorian novels start out slow and build slowly. I've heard it's because a lot of them were serialized in weekly incriminates then put together as one volume later. this story for being short I believe has lots of story lines and worth the read. I hope you enjoy this as it gets better as it goes

I started this one late since I had another book I wanted to finish off first. I am about 20% of the way through and should get through it by the end of the month. This is my first Anthony Trollope book, but I have been wanted to read some of his novels since I saw the Doctor Thorne mini-series a few years back.

Susan | 10 comments I haven't finished the book yet, but wanted to say that as my first Trollope I am enjoying it - sad to say that not much has changed regarding societal ethics (it's gotten worse, if anything) - my favorite humorous comment thus far: "The tone of our archdeacon's mind must not astonish us; it has been the growth of centuries of church ascendency; and though some fungi now disfigure the tree, though there be much dead wood, for how much good fruit have not we to be thankful? Who, without remorse, can batter down the dead branches of an old oak, now useless, but, ah! still beautiful..."
Happy New Year, all!
