Challenge Period: Jan 1 - Dec 31, 2024

For Each Month, read a book that was either:
1. added to TBR in that month (before 2024), OR
2. published in that month (any year)

GOALS for each month will be
12 books in January
11 books in February
10 books in March
...
2 books in November
1 book in December

BUT, if you don't meet your GOAL for that month, the balance will rollover onto the next month & accumulate over the year
Example:
Goal for March is 10.
Read only 7 books
Balance left 3 books being rolled over to April.

So for April, you have to read 9 (April's goal) + 3 (rollover from March) = 12 books. All 12 books should be April's tasks: added to TBR in April (before 2022) and/or published in April (any year).

If there's a balance left in April (ie. say only read 10 books), it is to be rolled over to May, again same guideline.

Notes:

If you're like me, your GR bookshelf is nearly un-manageable to browse for books added in a certain month. To make it easier, I'd recommend that you download your GR library as an excel file and use your filtering options for this.

1. Go to "My Books"
2. Under the heading "Tools", you'll find "Import and export" (scroll down to around mid-page; it's on your left hand side, underneath your shelf list)
3. Click "Export Library" -it may take some time for GR to generate this so just wait a bit
4. When your file is ready, a link will show up under "Export Library" noting "Your export from [date] - [time]". Click this link & save in desired folder when prompted.

Looking at your Excel file:
1. Go to "Data" tab and click, "Filter" (You'll see tabs in each column headers with little triangles)
2. Click on the tab for "Date Added" (Column P)
3. In the Dialog box for "Search (All)", type in the month you're looking at (do NOT use numerical values) & click OK. Your Data will be sorted to show only books added in that month for all years.

I must admit to having a struggle with this game and ended up quitting it last year. So, I am proud to announce that I will have started or read 7 books. [Yes, I am counting started on the books I own, because I will complete them but maybe not entirely in the month.]

I figured out that if you average 6+ books a month, you should be able to finish this one. But you gotta hit at least 6 to not have a huge rollover by the end of things.....

Just information if anyone is interested.

I started strong with all 12 of mine read, but come summer, I'm going to be slacking off because it's riding season and I want to be on my horse. Maybe audio books in my future?

Yep, 6-7 a month keeps you on track to have minimal or only one to read in December. It's fun to scare ourselves though with the growing total number to read until we hit that magical month where the goals go down and you start to makeup ground.

But there are super-readers out there (like you) who get their goals each month... way to go!

Thanks for that info. I usually end up quitting because books pile up too fast!

I've had a crazy week and didn't even realise January was over! I read 5, which is OK, but I had planned a lot more.

That is 1 more than me.

Well, January was a slow start -- I only managed one! I hope to do a little better for February.

Message 11 updated above with February's books.

February was basically a no-go for me.

I am still doing the started but not yet finished owned books in my count or I would never get this game done! However, I owned 3 in February's plan and am only counting 2...books I started. (And I did finish the started owned books from January, which were already counted.)

So carrying over:
February: 10
January: 3

Just two this month, so 16 rollover!

I have 12 to rollover for March having started with 19 for February.

After a great January, February was just 4... so my total for March will be 19 books: 10 for March and 9 rollovers. I can do this! Right?

Could be worse.

Well, my trip is calling, and I am so far behind on this game (again) that I am dropping out. Maybe I will work on it another year.

Well, I got off to a great start, but fell 3 books short of my March goal, so I'm basically back at January with 12 books for April.

March was a really tough month for me. I had a horsemanship clinic mid-month and never could get myself back on track. I've got what looks to be a decent April line-up, and nothing to interrupt my progress, so hopefully I'll catch back up this month.

Me too. I had a family tragedy early in the month where I didn't read much and it sort of affected the rest of the month.

I felt like I back-slid in March but actually read 5 which is one more than February, so I guess that's better than nothing. :-) I have TONS of books that I added to my TBR in April of 2013 (about when I joined GR/discovered kindle/ebooks), so one would think I could make some progress here... we'll see how well they play with other challenges, though.

April goal is 9 books + 14 rollover for a total goal of 23.

I'm really sorry to hear that. Makes my little horsemanship clinic feel like not that big a deal. At least all my family is ok. Hope things are brighter for you and that you are able to get some cheer from some good reads.

Thanks, Pat. We're all working to the other side of it and will heal eventually. But you had a fun excuse for getting off track - no need to feel bad about that!

I'm also rolling over 14 and I'm pretty sure 23 is the number of books we should 'have' for April to be on goal for the rest of the year. Remember, it will keep increasing until it will start to drop off after mid year so don't be discouraged in this challenge; it's early days!

I've been staying pretty on track; April is going to be downfall but mostly because I decided to read 2 epic historical fiction books Wolf Hall and World Without End. Trying to supplement with a couple graphic novels and novellas to break things up. Hopefully will catch up...just wanted to get some of these longer ones off my TBR!

Whoop! I'm officially caught up for April and will go into May with no rollover books. I'm tremendously excited because I'm coming up on riding season, and I want to be out riding in the afternoon instead of sitting inside reading!

Wow, that's amazing, Pat! I'm happy with my 7 so far which is a average target per month for me :)

I managed to read April's goal (YAY!) so going into May with the same rollover number but that's okay... I'm maintaining! May goal 8 + 14 rollover = 22 total goal.
