Ashleigh Motbey (ashybear02) | 1686 comments DEWEY DECIMAL CHALLENGE
Duration: January 1, 2024 - December 31, 2024

Have you ever stepped into the non-fiction section of a library and searched for a topic, but not really sure where you’re supposed to be looking? Well, you’re probably not alone. In 1873, an American librarian by the name of Melvil Dewey developed a system to help people around the world locate the book they are after.

For this challenge, you can read fiction and/or non-fiction books inspired by the Dewey Decimal Classification.

The main classes are:

000 – Computer science, information and general works
100 – Philosophy and psychology
200 – Religion
300 – Social sciences
400 – Language
500 – Pure science
600 – Technology
700 – Arts and recreation
800 – Literature
900 – History and geography

If you’d like to challenge yourself a little more, you are welcome to pick a subdivision of a class instead or as well.

For example:

580 - Plants
610 - Medicine and health
720 - Architecture

Ashleigh Motbey (ashybear02) | 1686 comments How to Participate:

1. Post here telling the challenge leader how many books you plan to read.
You can choose your books for the challenge at the beginning, or add them as you go. You can join a challenge at any time during the year and may also change your goal whenever needed.

2. When you finish a book for the challenge, post it here to let the challenge leader know.
Please be sure to post the total number of books you have completed and the number of your original message every time you post an update. We use the number of the original message to identify you, as there can be many members with the same name. The challenge leader will not look at this post to track your progress.

Example:
Update to message 32: 2/25 books read!

For more information about how challenges work, check out this thread or ask your challenge leader.

P.S. Please do not delete posts! It makes updating very confusing for the Moderators! If you decide to leave the challenge, please just let us know. You can edit your original post to say {deleted}. Thank you!

Margie | 988 comments It's been fun going down the dewey rabbit hole. Please update my goal from 15 to 25. I'd like to read a least one book in each main category and then see how many different (translated) languages I can read in the 800s. Thanks!
