Tamahome | 7216 comments In other words, what songs would you add to the playlist? https://nicholaseames.com/soundtrack/

Slash - By the Sword is sort of a rock The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhCnX...

Joe Walsh - In the City, this is from the movie Warriors, come out and play ay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1NeF...

Greta Van Fleet - Meeting the Master, it's not Led Zeppelin, but an incredible simulation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFFKe...

Steel Blue (just intonation tuning) - Hero, it's only on Bandcamp https://hansfordrowe.bandcamp.com/tra...

Oaken | 421 comments From that era I'm surprised he did not include David Bowie's - Heroes: https://youtu.be/bsYp9q3QNaQ?t=103
("we can beat them, just for one day
we could be heroes, just for one day")

More recent music would be Foo Fighters - My Hero : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqWRa...
("don't the best of them bleed it out
while the rest of them peter out?
...
there goes my hero, watch him as he goes")

Matrick's story seems tailor-made for Coldplay's Viva la Vida: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvgZk...
("i used to roll the dice,
feel the fear in my enemy's eyes,
listen as the crowd would sing,
now the old king is dead, long live the king")

One addition. Måneskin is big recently. Just-released "Trastavere" would fit Ganelon's history and his relationship with Sabbatha as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGAnd...
("open up my chest, take everything I've got, yeah

the touch of an angel
the taste of a drug
the look of a stranger
who has seen too much")

Tamahome | 7216 comments Heroes is on the Rose (book 2) playlist both by David Bowie and Peter Gabriel. I was going to say the Coldplay song sort of sounds like Alizée's J'en ai marre, but the tempo is different.

Trike | 11190 comments Honestly, the playlist seemed mellower than I expected. Before I saw it I was thinking it would be filled with harder, more up-tempo songs, particularly toward the end. I get that it’s more for characters than plot, so I’d propose a mixtape that was plot-centric.

When they meet Jain: “Fox on the Run” by Sweet.
https://youtu.be/qBdFA6sI6-8?si=hx-4U...

When the drummer’s wife doesn’t want him to go with Saga, it’s straight out of Blues Brothers, so “Think” by Aretha Franklin:
https://youtu.be/Vet6AHmq3_s?si=OMIy1...

Disheartened by the immensity of the task before them, Clay offers encouragement, “Keep Yourself Alive” by Queen:
https://youtu.be/k3ecuj2g9vM?si=3GZ2h...

When they find their bandmate has been turned into a statue for crimes, “Petrified” by Saint Raven:
https://youtu.be/WJ19dajxurw?si=MbbTo...

When they get help from their old buddies of another band during the arena battle, “A Little Help from My Friends” by the Beatles:
https://youtu.be/2Q_ZzBGPdqE?si=RJzUI...

They gear up with pointy things and magic stuff, “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen:
https://youtu.be/tuCU40aLmvM?si=jMa1E...

They run into Jain again at the pub, “Barracuda” by Heart:
https://youtu.be/PeMvMNpvB5M?si=8LJIk...

When their troubles are compounded by bounty hunters and betrayal, “Dirty Deeds” by AC/DC:
https://youtu.be/jsjdjWGDvFk?si=tXJ8v...

After that they get away and catch a breather as they sail away on the skyship with the wind in their hair, “Magic Carpet Ride” by Steppenwolf:
https://youtu.be/U4WiyxXpyZc?si=O2ki3...

The bounty hunter Larkspur catches up to them, “One Way or Another” by Blondie (which, honestly, is the most on-point song of this list):
https://youtu.be/valVixMpzQY?si=ZC939...

Out the frying pan, into the fire - beset by cannibals! “Cannibals” by the Units:
https://youtu.be/KIBhetUW_H0?si=9AdSY...

Backstory and revelations (he was awake the entire time as a statue! She was killed over and over!), “Stone Cold Crazy” by Queen:
https://youtu.be/S0kTkxhyWNo?si=aEWsC...

They get their butts kicked but their friends show up again, “Help!” by the Beatles:
https://youtu.be/2Q_ZzBGPdqE?si=Rln-h...

People die, a lot, but they persevere, “Union of the Strong” by Freedom Call:
https://youtu.be/a8N58--6blA?si=U2mHV...

A new army rises, “Kickstart My Heart” by Motley Crue:
https://youtu.be/mVurA44hwiw?si=svtbm...

They rally and start kicking ass, “Smokin’” by Boston:
https://youtu.be/bDI-AdnIK08?si=P4oVs...

All-out battle ensues, “Through the Fire and Flames” by Dragonforce:
https://youtu.be/DZyYapMZSec?si=Ce4JB...

The end, where things calm down and get sorted, “Strange Magic” by E.L.O.:

I've mentioned it in another thread, but for the introduction of Lady Jain and the Silk Arrows, I'd recommend

"Stand and Deliver" by Adam and the Ants
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4B2a6...

A bit of Aussie rock for the montage of them setting out for Castia "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC (I'm thinking of the movie version to come)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l482T...

When they escape. "Band on the Run" by Paul McCartney and Wings.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5P_Vf...

and for the Finish (sic) 😜 "Hard Rock Hallelujah" by Lordi

Tamahome | 7216 comments Are they Klingons?

Ruth | 1778 comments I’m a big fan of classic rock so I enjoyed spotting all the references (albeit some of them made me roll my eyes). The playlist is packed with absolute bangers. I especially like the choice of the guitar solo from Free Bird for the Battle of the Bands - a nod I suspect to its use in the church scene from Kingsman: The Secret Service. Which, if you haven’t seen it, is one of the most incredible fight scenes ever filmed imho. Starring Colin Firth (with Samuel L Jackson cast against type as a squeamish supervillain) and featuring the immortal line “Hail Satan, and have a lovely afternoon.”

Just for that gem alone I'm giving you back the credibility points I took away when you dissed "Ramble On" by Led Zeppelin a couple years back. Reading the rest of your list, I'm impressed with your musical tastes.

My own additions to this include:

(as I mentioned before) "Jane" by Jefferson Starship
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXmrM...

"More Than a Feeling" by Boston, although I think for this book let's use the cover version by Steve N Seagulls

"Breaking the Law" by Judas Priest just because

Loved the video for Goody Two Shoes. About to start Kings of the Wyld. Just finished Iron Flame, which I like better than Fourth Wing.

Dana Van Pelt (danalv) | 39 comments Thanks for sharing the Harsh video. They are really good. There is a really good band called Dirty Honey. They have played here in Las Vegas a few times. Also, Rival Sons is another great hard rock band. Maneskin (Italian) gets better and better all the time. I worry they are going to burn themselves out though with constant touring. My husband said a few weeks ago that rock as we knew it is dead but I told him it is still alive and well, you just need to look a little harder for it. All of the above bands have multiple songs that go well with Kings of the Wyld.

Tamahome | 7216 comments Dirty Honey, Rolling 7's, nice extended guitar solo, just when you think it's over it keeps going

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42rmU...

Rival Songs, Pressure and Time live, best version I think (it's also in a commercial), powerful vocals

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIJ-t...

No click tracks or backing tracks for either band...

I like this Dorothy - Gifts from the Holy Ghosts (lyrics in CC) one too, best version. Did she find religion? Her other videos seem more satannic lol. Might be good for Rose in the second book.

Some music writers have talked about what used to be a ~13 year rock vs. pop cycle where one style of music gave way to the other for 6-7 years at a time (in terms of the music that "owned the charts.") That started to change a bit with the decline of grunge in the 1990s and rock came back but not with quite the same broad appeal that it used to. Yes you have some great new bands but there hasn't been that same wholesale chart dominance that rock used to do.

1951 started with the first rock bands, peaked with Elvis
1964 rise of the Beatles
1976 introduction of punk rock and new wave
1990 grunge
2002 indie rock

https://globalnews.ca/news/4082568/th...

(the article was written in 2018; in a recent podcast the author admitted that the last renewal he was talking about kind of fizzled out this time around.)

message 20: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome | 7216 comments The move to grunge was sort of coerced by the gatekeepers at the time. These days everyone is on social media, and the challenge is to curate everything and find the good stuff.

Well, if we're going to get into new rock, this song would be perfect for a fight scene:

Die to Live by Volbeat

John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 5193 comments I was not a fan of grunge. It's funny, I would listen to all sorts of pop on my way to work so have a passing acquaintance with all sorts of singers I don't really care about. Grunge I actively disliked. The only band that really broke through for me that I have collected and care about was Pink Floyd. On account of the direct aping of The Wall with Operation Mindcrime I became a Queensryche fan, but have a distinct difficulty with their earlier stuff. (Was odd to be at a concert and the fans are singing along to "Queen of the Reich" which I thought didn't deserve to be done even as "taking it back" ironic statement.)

That would be excellent for a fight scene. Although it does skew towards thrash, and my issue there is that I can never understand what they’re saying. Especially that really dark screamy stuff. I don’t get the appeal, but different strokes and all that.

The most recent rock song that I’ve heard that I like is “Happiness is Overrated” by Letdown, which came out last summer.

I've seen Rival Sons play in a small rock club in Nottingham, one of the best gigs I've ever been to. They're definitely keeping the fires of rock burning.
As AC/DC said, rock and roll will never die.

Let’s go ahead and do a mixtape for Bloody Rose. If you like the first book then you’ll enjoy the sequel.

I think the obvious bands are in the genre of epic gothic metal: Nightwish, Evanescence, Epica, Frozen Crown and Doro. Very much a “well no duh” list. So I’m going to branch out a little. Add Heart’s “Barracuda” and “Crazy on You” where appropriate.

Just for general vibes, these songs:
“Hell’s Comin’ With Me” by Poor Mans Poison (wait for the 1-minute mark)
https://youtu.be/9oDxynh7rG0?si=qVwS3...

“A Good Song Never Dies” by Saint Motel
https://youtu.be/s29fcv5E52Y?si=VSKHi...

“This Ain’t No Place For No Hero” - The Heavy
https://youtu.be/9u9ymiSmtXY?si=lmY0J...

“I’m Gonna Live Till I Die” - Sarah Vaughn
https://youtu.be/9uWvFT98bmo?si=eH624...

For Rose:
“Hit Me With Your Best Shot” - Pat Benatar
https://youtu.be/JRD80XRMT7s?si=BgNLt...

“Bad Woman Blues” by Beth Hart
https://youtu.be/qiRiPtg9EFk?si=v-zC9...

“I’m Going To Hell” - The Pretty Reckless (metal version - NSFW)
https://youtu.be/bmtbg5b7_Aw?si=jq_xk...
(Acoustic version - NSFW)
https://youtu.be/gI7Q1L4VfGs?si=VFYGo...

I think a pair of Ivy Levan’s songs sum up Rose pretty well:
“Hot Damn”
https://youtu.be/sAxzkViLCH0?si=uB2xx...
“I Don’t Wanna Wake Up (Explicit)” - NSFW
https://youtu.be/pxIpQNH9MEk?si=pOdnd... (It even has a bear, which, if you’ve read the book…)

For Tam:
“A Voice That Carries” by Bonnie McKee
https://youtu.be/jEIQtK3Q5SM?si=PEeXp...

“Go Baby Go” - Nina Lee
https://youtu.be/YflsFaEG7Cs?si=eCWfV...

“Pretty Girls” by Renee Rapp
https://youtu.be/6g4Y5IYY5Mk?si=ExJyQ...

“I Enjoy Being A Girl” - Sutton Foster version (originally from Flower Drum Song)
https://youtu.be/7qBy3BWgXbM?si=AujBV...
(Original version - you may recognize the young suitor as a certain CEO whose HQ is at the top of Nakatomi Plaza: https://youtu.be/8JigBfoDtzY?si=rmZDV...)

For Brune:
“Man or a Monster” - Sam Tinnesz
https://youtu.be/pEnPq_fa8z4?si=IgER_...

For Cura:
“You Can Run” - Adam Jones
https://youtu.be/78IaxWzDkuU?si=iZKqm...

Battle scene (pick one):
“Outer Dimensions” - Amaranthe
https://youtu.be/y3abhagVcgY?si=kVdlx...

“Blood of Heaven” - Nocturna
https://youtu.be/LDCb4ftUpLY?si=elOl6...

I don't know why it's not their #1 song.
(But then for Steel Panther, I think 17 Girls in a Row should be their #1 song.)

For Tam? Isn't for me right? I like that song though.

The Fuzz - Delicious Disgusting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7II0... might be good for Rose with the female singer who's almost like Freddie Mercury. This song should have a million Spotify plays but it doesn't. That's me trying to figure out the lyrics in the comments.

Renee Austin - Pillow, I recorded this off my tv with my phone, it looks bad but the blues rock redhead and band is great.
