I really enjoyed reading this book, however it’s not really in the realm of books I read anymore(view spoiler)[ with the paranormal and fantasy of nightmares being trapped in books, words appearing on pages when those books open, and characters coming to life from the minds of people. I was expecting a killer to make common nightmares come true or find out people’s specific nightmares somehow such as with a psychologist (hide spoiler)]. It wasn’t too over the top that it was unbearable especially with the intensity of the kills that the book started with. I feel like as the book went on, it turned more into a young adult book with a silly little plot.
I really enjoyed the author’s writing style and would read another one of his books, but if he sticks with this King-like writing while reusing the same horror tropes, I might have to abandon him like I did to King. There’s only a few works of Stephen King that I can stand and it’s the ones that stay in the realism world.
The multiple reveals at the end were a bit over the top. (view spoiler)[ Ben and his siblings were calling their half brother dad… fine, I can live with that unnecessary “twist,” but then it turns out Jennifer is also a half sibling? Let’s calm down before this becomes a soap opera and we lose the horror theme. (hide spoiler)] I would’ve liked to see the book have more action being taken with a little less drag out towards the end, but I think in comparison to the books I’ve read this year, this one did well.
