Next month we will wrap up our current series, so that means it’s time to look ahead to our next series, which will start February 1, 2024. What would you like to read and discuss with the group? Nominations are now open!

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
Rules for nominating a series:
1. The series must be complete (as far as we can reasonably tell).
2. The series must be fantasy (I know, seems obvious).
3. The series should not be targeted mainly for middle school or a YA audience.
4. The series must not be one the group has already read. Look through the list of discussions or the group bookshelf to see if we’ve read it before.
5. Each member may nominate one series. Please tell us the name of the series, the author, how many books are in the series, and the name of first book in the series. If you want to add more information, please feel free.
6. Nominations no longer need a second to move into the polling as long as they meet the other guidelines.
8. Nominations will be open through December 21. We will then have a poll. If there are a lot of nominations or the results are close, we will have a run-off poll between or among the top vote-getters.

Please post nominations in this topic thread here on the group page, not by responding to the broadcast message sent to your Goodreads inbox.

Nominations are open! Let’s go!

Could you tell me the author or the titles of the books? When I search for “Darker shades of magic”, several options come up. I thought maybe you were referring to V.E. Schwab’s series (Shades of Magic) but I wasn’t sure since there are only 3 books in that series. Thanks!

Michelle (michellehartline) | 135 comments I'd like to nominate Chris Wooding's four book series, Tales of the Ketty Jay. It was a lot of fun! The first is Retribution Falls.

The group read and discussed this in 2020. See rule #4: 4. The series must not be one the group has already read. Look through the list of discussions or the group bookshelf to see if we’ve read it before.

Please feel free to nominate something else that the group has not previously read. Thanks!

Nachiket | 19 comments I'll nominate World of the Five Gods as a duology, by Lois McMaster Bujold, 2 books, starting with The Curse of Chalion, with the 2nd book being Paladin of Souls.

Some prequel novels and novellas are also set in this world, but they take place in a completely different time and location, with entirely different characters.

I am only nominating this as a duology (the two books mentioned above).

(The 1st book, The Curse of Chalion was nominated for the Hugo, Locus, and World Fantasy Awards for best novel, and won the Mythopoeic Fantasy award in 2002. The 2nd book Paladin of Souls won the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards for best novel, and was nominated for the Mythopoeic Fantasy award in 2004).

Christina (christinaovallsbooks) | 69 comments Can I nominate the Gods of Blood and Powder trilogy by Brian McLellan. Starting with Sins of Empire. I liked his other series very much, and it looks like the group already read Powder Mage, so bonus!

Thank you for the nomination. I am going to disqualify it as it appears to be mostly aimed at a YA audience. See Rule #3 in the first post: 3. The series should not be targeted mainly for middle school or a YA audience. In addition, it is not clear if the series is completed.
Please feel free to nominate something else. Thanks!

It has been a long time since I've read these books. Looking forward to a reread.
