Fannie D'Ascola | 608 comments Hello,

I'm looking for recommendation for Falcon - Social Worker.

I have really no idea of a book that fits that prompt. I'm re-posting it here in case that can help:

''read a book where a major character works to help other people, where social work or the public good is a major part of the story, or with a social worker or activist on the cover, or the word “social” in the title.''

message 23: by Shawnie (new)

Shawnie | 3247 comments Mod
I take this one a little broadly if you don't want to read a book about a social worker or activist. A major character who helps other people should be easy to find in a book. For ex, I just read a book where a character takes in children during WWII, and I'd consider that helping others and doing deeds for the public good. The War That Saved My Life A character who looks out for the public good could also be police, detectives, nonprofits, healthcare workers, etc.

For those who have read Maggie Steifvater's The Raven Boys, are any of the characters ravens or shapeshifters? I really want to read it for the winged character on the cover but I won't if the raven isn't a character. Thanks!

No. The raven is the school mascot. There is a pet raven but not what I would consider a character.

I was thinking of A Wrinkle in Time.

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 794 comments Hi hivemind!
I need help. I'm scrambling to defeat Mr. Hyde and with little over a week left, I am looking for shorter books - middle grade or the like is great (I'm a childrens' librarian, so ...)
I need books for:

1. Obsessed by the Story- read a book where someone is obsessed with a particular story, where a character’s favorite story gets mentioned over and over, or with someone reading on the cover.

and

3. Legacy- read a book where someone inherits something special from a parent, where someone’s parentage is important to the story, or with an inherited item on the cover.

Hit me with ideas. Thanks :)

1. I asked my middle school librarian friend about this because I'm also short on time, and she highly recommended Yusuf Azeem Is Not a Hero.

The Lost Library would also fit, but she wasn't wowed by it like she was the first.

Parable of the Sower and Un Lun Dun would also fit but are more standard length books.

3. I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter is a YA book some friends have loved and just under 10 hrs on audio, which if you're like many of us and listen sped up, isn't too bad.

A House with Good Bones is a great spooky novella that fits inheritance.

Planet Earth Is Blue is a fantastic, short MG book about a nonverbal autistic MC learning to live with her new adoptive parents, which I think fits the spirit of "parentage is important." Get ready to have all the emotions.

I used Thornyhold for Legacy. It is a really short (200 pages), easy-to-read gothic romance if you are into that type of thing. The main character inherits the house on the cover. I enjoyed it.

Obsessed by the Story -- The Fault in Our Stars or Lock Every Door, which are average length.

Legacy -- The False Prince, which isn't too long, or Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25, which is a quick book.

I think I'll try Yusuf Azeem Is Not a Hero and A House with Good Bones, they sound untriguing and are available as both audio and ebooks via my library, so that's also a factor :D

I also really enjoyed Lock Every Door for a good thriller. :)

Kate (kgskocelas) | 474 comments I have read several books now for Bucky - Camp Lehigh that didn't turn out to fit. As a reminder, it needs to be:
- set on a military installation
- fort or military camp is important to the story
- some kind of military base, camp, facility, or building on the cover

1. Would The Things They Carried fit for this?

2. Is there a book you know fits that you enjoyed & would recommend?

I haven't done that one yet but I am probably going to use Words of Radiance since a good majority of the story is set in a military installation. The Things They Carried would probably work for a fort or military camp being important to the story just by the fact that this is where those people lived and survived during the war.

Rhythm of War would work. I read a nonfiction about the Berlin Wall that was mixed in quality. Probably a lot of post-apocalypse stories would fit. I haven't read The Things They Carried, so I don't know about that.

From what I'm reading of some people's reviews, Kate, I'd say it does.
