Hannah | 3288 comments I think this is an example of when it wasn’t the book for me. It had all of the elements of books that I tend to love – it was historical fiction, set in a place and event an event I knew nothing about, and the character contrasted with the place. But for some reason, I just didn’t connect with this one, and for such a short book, I found myself constantly looking to the end to work out how many pages I had to get through. I think one of the reasons I felt a disconnect to the book was that there were lots of characters that came and went and then reappeared later, and there were also a number of different narrators. I also found the book depressing and pessimistic in its view of Sub-Saharan Africa.
