When Nick learns that a detective was shot at the Reese house and doesn’t learn who it is until he reaches the hospital, he completely shuts down and declares he “can’t do this.” Why this moment?

Nick loves Sam and fears for her safety. He is scared and hasn't yet learned how to deal with the level of risk her job has.

As I mentioned earlier. Nick must come to terms with being in a relationship with a cop. He needs to decide if being with Sam is worth living with the danger.

This is the reason so many cops' marriages fail. It is hard to live with the idea that your spouse could go to work and not come home. Nick needs to weigh the pros and cons of being married to a cop, then he needs to decide if he can live with the risks.
