Before Night Falls sounds great and is by a Cuban writer.

I'm doing 'Waiting for the Dark, Waiting for the Light' which is about Communist Czechoslovakia.

I'll choose something by the Albanian author Ismail Kadare. They've had a tumultuous history but he lived there when they had communist leaders during a period.

I've started Half of Man is Woman by Zhang Xianliang for this task. The author lived in China throughout the Cultural Revolution and was sent to both prison and a labor camp.
