The prologue was so captivating and very promising. I had such high hopes going into the book after the first ten pages or however long that was, but everything that came after that was so mundane in comparison that it was kind of a let down. The book focused mostly on Dr. Wallis’s romantic life (I didn’t sign up to read a romance novel) and when the author did talk about the test subjects it was long pages of “...she continued to read and he continued to watch TV…” or very short sections of out of the ordinary things(view spoiler)[ like when Shaz decides to mutilate herself (hide spoiler)] that they breeze past.
I was expecting the book to reflect more of the “murder, self-mutilation, and madness” based on the supposed experiment in 1954, but those horrors were limited in the book. I don’t know if this is because there were only two test subjects in the experiment or if the author had other goals with the book.
The ending was horrid. (view spoiler)[ The whole idea of a second consciousness was outlandish enough, but for it to be released through Chad and have him go on a rampage, killing spree with superhuman strength, speed, and hearing was way too much for my rolling eyes to handle. He gets injected in his spine (which in of itself can do damage) with a paralytic agent ten times the recommended dose, then again to his heart, just to be shot twice, only to finally be put down by a car?? Come on, this book is everything except what I was looking for in a good book. Also the Epilogue was just as bad with Brook’s brother getting revenge and killing Dr. Wallis after he was declared not guilty. It was too perfect. (hide spoiler)]
