This is the place where we just might make a dent in those overflowing TBR piles and shelves. Books you already own (sometimes for years!) will count towards this challenge. The goal is to finally get to some of the books you meant to read before all the new and shiny books distracted you. C'mon, you know you're guilty of that. I know I am! :)

You can sign up for the challenge here: https://www.goodreads.com/challenges/...

We'll tackle those book piles THIS year!! Good luck and have fun!

a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 19 comments Good idea!
What should we use as shelf name?

Whatever works for you. You just need to enter whatever you call it on the challenge page and when you tag books to that shelf they'll count towards the challenge.

Are you on the GR app? Sometimes it acts weird and doesn't go to the page it's supposed to.
You can try looking on the home page of HA. You should see the TBR challenge there.

Anne | 76 comments I’m in! I’ve been trying all of this year to mostly work on my tbr. I did ok but of course there’s still a lot to do. ;-)

Good luck, you optimist! :)
I thought I was being bold with a goal of 25 (btw, this was my goal last year and ...well, I didn't do so good).

1. Breathless
2. Flee
3. A Caller's Game
4. Blacktop Wasteland

Justin Fraxi (barondeghost) | 54 comments I'm going to try for 50 because I like numbers like that. On the one hand that sounds like a lot to me, but on the other hand I HAVE a lot of unread books from years (possibly decades) ago.

Update 3/14: I'm changing it to 25. I'm having so many problems with old Kindle editions of some of these books and trying to get them to count as read for the challenge. It's not a problem with the challenge, it's a Goodreads problem, but I'm too frustrated to bother with it. 50 was probably too many anyway.

Q1 Update
This challenge has been great to ensure that I consistently focus on reading from my TBR. I have learned however, that I am more of a mood reader than I even thought I was. I started both House of Leaves and Bunny but put them aside. Not because I wasn't enjoying them, but because I just wasn't in the mood to read those books. I will get to them this year for sure but I'm parking them for now.

Q2 Update
I continued making progress although I still haven't gone back to my parking lot books yet.

Q3 Update
A much slower quarter of reading for me so not much progress was made on this challenge.

Q4 Update
I finished strong and ended up exceeding my goal of 20 books. 34% of my total books read this year were from my TBR shelves.

Parking Lot
Bunny by Mona Awad - shelved Apr 2020
The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle - shelved Jun 2020
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski - shelved Oct 2022
The Necromancer's House by Christopher Buehlman - shelved Dec 2017

That's an incredible challenge. Best of luck with that one. I must add 5-10 books a week to my TBR list. The only way to avoid that is to just stay off of Goodreads. (Not a chance). That means I would have to read and remove 5-10 books a week from my TBR shelves. Looks like I'm hopeless case.

Thanks for the encouragement @Lisa! That book has intimidated me ever since I picked it up. My husband actually bought it for me and I've remained partly excited/partly in fear ever since!!

Jessica | 139 comments I just signed up and my goal is 100. I don't have too many unread physical books, they're mostly eBooks so I should be able to crush it. I do want to ask why the challenge has already started, shouldn't it begin January 1st?

message 49: by Canavan (new)

Canavan | 600 comments Jessica wondered: shouldn't it begin January 1st?

That’s when it does begin. A few participants have started listing books, but I’m pretty sure that those are books that they intend to read as part of the challenge.

C.E.C. (milanesa) | 54 comments little question, hope it's not bothersome to ask here but: do they have to be only horror books or can they also be generally speculative fiction books?
