UNO Rules for if you have a question - chances are it's here! If not ask :)

Team Sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/... - for viewing only (only Captains get to add info here!)

Planning Sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/... - our tracking sheet that everyone can add books and information to

Challenge Status Sheet: [to come] - to check out how we are doing against the other drinks!

Robin Hood Gang with Team Rules written across them

"Rules" might be a bit strong, but some principles to go by:

1. It's a game, for fun! So keep it fun!
2. Be kind to each other - we all know that written messages can sometimes land in a way not intended. Assume the best from each other please.
3. Be present - please do pop into the chat once a week to let us know you're still about. If life happens and you need to drop out or adjust book levels, let us know. The only thing that will make us grumpy is if you vanish and we have to chase you down!

Approach to the Challenge
We'll have a planning sheet that everyone can add their own books whether as a forward plan or on completion. if you don't get on with sheets feel free to just post a completion post when you are done and someone will add it for you.

For claiming books: we only have claims for colour cards and reverses, otherwise we'll pop them in wherever they work best.
In general we'll allocate books as:
- colour covers
- reverses
- fill in Draw 2s
- tricky cards (E, I, V)
- other cards to complete hands

Quick Reminder
Books must be at least 101 pages
Those that might be lighter on words be page (Childrens / Graphics) must be 25k words (verified - ARBookFinder is our friend) or 3 hours audio
Rereads over 6 months OK

Spellouts use:
- number in title / # series
- author name (first / last)
- character name (first / last / nickname)
- title
- location (though I hate using this reason, so let's y'know, not!)

Letters:
Z, O, T, H, F, I, S, V, E, N, K, P

Colour covers: we are using our eyes and common sense to decide if it is red / yellow / green / blue.

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments Hello and welcome to UNO 2024!

I think we are all veterans - please shout if not! On that assumption, I'll gloss over the rules and such (all linked above) and just launch into the "YAY!s"

I for one have been eagerly anticipating the start of UNO, though not enough that I could stop myself from reading Ethan of Athos (Vorkosigan Saga, #3) by Lois McMaster Bujold . Thankfully it would be of no use in Feb, so my need to inhale the Vorkosigan series isn't now filling me with guilt! (if you haven't, read it! Miles is just the BEST!)

Anyway, me: Cat (she/her) live and work in London, love reading, particularly SFF, will put myself through some real dross in the name of team challenges. Currently raving about The Warrior's Apprentice (Vorkosigan Saga, #2) by Lois McMaster Bujold & others in the series, also just finished The New Jim Crow Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander which was a brilliant read whilst also being profoundly depressing...

UNO shelf: uno24

Over to you: what book(s) are you currently trying to push into other people's hands?

✿~Danielle~✿ (dmh1) | 1759 comments Hello team :)

I’m Danielle (she/her) and I’m from Wales. This is my 9th time playing uno. It’s a fun one and definitely a good way to start the new year.

Romance books are what I mainly read, with some fantasy, mystery and sci-fi thrown in.

Here’s my shelf uno

message 14: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments I hope you enjoy it! It is Bujold's first book, so is a bit rougher than her later stuff, but still good :)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Cat, you failed to mention that the Vorkosigan saga had such vividly coloured covers. That would have been helpful information prior to this point.

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 1155 comments Hi I am Marie (she/her) I live in the UK - Yorkshire - claimed by many as God's own County.
I am currently reading books of a YLTO annual challenge that I am sure will fit here too. Can't wait for the new Eve Dallas (late January) otherwise I am enjoying a real mix at the moment.

2024 is my year of positive thinking - I am trying to look on the bright side of life as the alternative is too frightening

Just back from celebrating Husband's 70th too much wine to make plans

message 28: by Frida (new)

Frida (butthenyouread) | 329 comments Hello ladies! Except for Vian, I've been in a team for one challenge or another with all of you before! This is my 4th year of uno, by far my favorite challenge. Although everytime uno signups come around again, it scares me a little to realize just how fast the year has gone by 😅
The first half of february is going to be a little slow for me. My book club is reading the Iliad and the Odyssey, which I know I'm going to struggle with (poetry is really not my thing...). Once that's done though (Feb 17th) I should be back at my regular speed!
I don't have any books in particular that I have lined up for this Uno. Planning on freestyling it, and picking books to fit whatever cards fit we seem to be struggling with (and whatever genre fits my mood)
Excited to see what the Uno gods (mini challenges!!!) have in store for us this year

message 35: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 1012 comments Hello all! I'm Sarah from the UK. The first Uno was my first ever team challenge... and here I still am. I used to remember details like who was on each team in each challenge, but all these years later I haven't a hope, haha!

Waves at all the visiting members of the AAA. I'm planning on starting Uno with listening to Geneva before my cheap deal on Audible finishes and I cancel again. Seemed appropriate. ;)

My shelf is uno-2024.

Vian (vianvamp) | 30 comments Hi Everyone!

I'm Vian, and I'm from Atlanta, Georgia. I love team challenges, but somehow this is my first time playing UNO.
I don't have any reading plans yet, but I have a huge tbr backlog I'm working on. Somewhere in my pile of books should be some good challenge options.

Here's my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Sarah | 1012 comments Are we going to start claiming colour cards? I probably have something for everything if I look hard enough, lol.

I have The Hangman's Daughter (The Hangman's Daughter, #1) by Oliver Pötzsch which could do 1, 3, or Skip Red.

Also if my green I've already put on the s/s doesn't turn up a K or a P, Monster, She Wrote The Women Who Pioneered Horror and Speculative Fiction by Lisa Kröger will fit Skip Green or work for a WD4.

Dear Mrs. Bird (The Emmy Lake Chronicles #1) by A.J. Pearce for Skip Blue.

I have plenty of yellows but nothing immediately planned, also don't want to claim too many before everyone has a chance. :)

The editions may not be exactly right but they are the right covers.

message 41: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 1155 comments I Have blue cover A Morbid Taste for Bones (Chronicles of Brother Cadfael, #1) by Ellis Peters
The Windsor Knot by S.J. Bennett

Green The Wren, the Wren by Anne Enright

Red The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor

Yellow Every Good Boy Does Fine A Love Story, in Music Lessons by Jeremy Denk
The Lagos Wife by Vanessa Walters

I am not sure where they fit - don't have much time today to look but if needed i can do these. Generally i am not controlled enough in my reading to plan ahead

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments Great idea Sarah - yes, if you know there is a colour cover book you are going to read in Feb, do shout out & reserve it :)

I know I am sitting on
The Mostly True Story of Tanner and Louise by Colleen Oakley which I am confident is blue and has T character - so 2 Blue. Don't know about skip.

The big question will be whether I can sit on Komarr (Vorkosigan Saga, #11) by Lois McMaster Bujold till Feb? pros: it fits a Skip Blue, it prolongs my time with Miles. cons: BUT I WANT TO READ IT NOW!!!!

message 44: by ✿~Danielle~✿ (new)

✿~Danielle~✿ (dmh1) | 1759 comments If it was any colour other than blue, I’d say fingers crossed you could keep it. But blue is easier to find, if you do read.

message 45: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 1012 comments The struggle to save blue covers is real! I've been dithering for ages over whether to save my blue skip - it would be easier to listen to it now, as library due dates are going to mean a rush if I wait til Feb.

Given how many possible blue skips have been mentioned already, I think I'm just going to go ahead and start it today. So scrap the blue skip for me after all! I think it's about the easiest colour card of the lot, along with 2 blue.

message 46: by ccap (new)

ccap | 147 comments Now comes the time when I start to wonder if I should hold off on a few pages for just over a week. Ha, ha. Although, madly finishing a book for book club DOES make that a bit easier for some of the other books I'm currently reading. Oh yeah, AND only just starting one that is 964 pages helps too. Doubt I'll be finished by then anyway.

message 47: by ccap (new)

ccap | 147 comments Is it my imagination or are there fewer team members this year?

message 48: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments No point in holding off, unless you mean to prolong a read - books have to be started AFTER the challenge starts to count.

We've got a few big readers in the team - they've balanced it so that each team should be reading about 85 books each month

message 49: by ccap (new)

ccap | 147 comments Oh, I thought they only had to be FINISHED after the challenge started. Okay. Thanks.
