April 2024 Mini Challenge

RULES

** Books DO NOT all have to be mysteries. You can use any genres.

** A book can be used only once for this challenge, but can be used for other challenges (Seasonal, World Trip, Ultimate, etc.).

** You DO NOT have to choose books in advance, and can change your mind at any time if you do.

** Do as many as you are able and have fun!

On July 25, 2024, Billy Joel will perform his 150th and final concert at Madison Square Garden, ending a ten-year residency. On Sunday, April 14, CBS will air his 100th concert, filmed March 28. Your host being a life-long fan, she thought she could have some fun with this — and found it difficult to narrow down the possibilities to just five, but persevered in the end.

1. Billy Joel’s first hit single in 1973 was “Piano Man” (#25 in the US), which opens with the lyrics, It’s nine o’clock on a Saturday/The regular crowd shuffles in/There’s an old man sitting next to me/Making love to his tonic and gin Read a book that revolves around or features alcohol, such as a book set in a pub, bar, or vineyard.

2. “The Longest Time” was released in 1984 and topped the charts at #14 in the US. I don't care what consequence it brings/I have been a fool for lesser things/I want you so bad/I think you ought to know that/I intend to hold you for the longest time:— Read a book that has been on your TBR “for the longest time” (more than one year).

3. “This is the Time” hit #18 on the charts in 1986, and years later was your host’s senior class song. We walked on the beach beside that old hotel/They're tearing it down now, but it's just as wellRead a book set at a hotel, inn, B&B or guesthouse.

4. “We Didn’t Start the Fire” hit #1 in 1989. In it, Joel rattles off a list of historical references in order to argue that his generation — as the title says — didn't “start the fire” of global tragedy, scandal, and screw-ups. ”We didn't start the fire/It was always burning, since the world's been turning/We didn't start the fire/No, we didn't light it, but we tried to fight it” — Read a history or historical fiction (mystery, romance or literary fiction).

5. In 1990, “The Downeaster’Alexa’” was released and peaked at #57 on US charts. It describes the plight of fishermen in the Northeast United States amongst the challenges of overfishing and global warming. “I was a bayman like my father was before/Can't make a living as a bayman anymore/There ain't much future for a man who works the sea/But there ain't no island left for islanders like me.” As April 22 is Earth Day, this seems a fitting fifth challenge. — Read a book with water on the cover or in the title.

1. Billy Joel’s first hit single in 1973 was “Piano Man” (#25 in the US), which opens with the lyrics, It’s nine o’clock on a Saturday/The regular crowd shuffles in/There’s an old man sitting next to me/Making love to his tonic and gin— Read a book that revolves around or features alcohol, such as a book set in a pub, bar, or vineyard.

We walked on the beach beside that old hotel/They're tearing it down now, but it's just as well —Read a book set at a hotel, inn, B&B or guesthouse.
