Hi, everyone! This is the thread for the January "Commit to one book monthly" challenge. In this thread, post one book you intend to read for January, so everyone else can see your pick. When you finish reading it, we'd love for you to come back and post your opinion. I expect everyone's TBRs to suffer because of this monthly reading challenge, but I'm prepared to make that sacrifice. Are you? :-D

I commit to reading Mr Wilder & Me by Jonathan Coe in January, because it was chosen for me about a year ago in another challenge and I still haven't read it.

I started that one too and pushed it aside for a horror novel. I need to get back to it. 🤦🏾

Interesting choices. I can tell you guys will have *no consideration whatsoever* for my TBR.

It could be way shorter IMO. Great story/world (but really dark) and characters, but lots of real time day to day that isn't keeping my interest.

Sorry to hear that Bonnie. I loved it, and am loving it now. I think I like all that detail. Hopefully, the next book works better for you!! *fingers crossed*

I think it will. I think this being the first in series just had a lot of setting up the series stuff.

I hate when that happens! I tried to hold onto my last one, but it was literally coming apart. 😩😂

finished this one (actually started it in December. Well written, but not really for me. Too dark, too wordy, characters were pretty cold and heartless and stayed there. If you like dark epic fantasy, though, the author knew what he was doing.

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 231 comments Jennifer - I am very interested in reading your choice Mr Wilder & Me! I wanted to read it when it was first published in the UK but it wasn’t available in the US for at least a year or more! I was so disappointed. I am a big Jonathan Coe fan. Look forward to your comments! I’ll eventually read it.

I finished my book. This was the 2nd in the series and really good. The first book was better, in my opinion. But if you're interested in the 12 plagues and Moses leading the Hebrews out of Egypt, this is a series to check out.

Finished this morning. 3.5 stars. Not my favorite Le Guin novel but it was her first and was a good intro to her work and style.

I finished it this morning, Pam -- and really liked it. It focused on the two ends of his life that bookend the part in the middle where all his most famous films were made and it was interesting to see the character escaping the turmoil in Europe with all his best days before him, and the character at the other end who is being forced to see that his best days might be behind him.

Jamie (jbeadle87) | 1 comments I am committing to read Embrace Your Weird by Felicia Day. I started it years ago and have made like 4 pages in. So, this month to get my reading going, I want to get that book off my reading cart and back on the shelf.

I actually finished this book last weekend. So far it has been my favourite read of 2024. I've enjoyed all the books in this series and this one didn't disappoint.

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 231 comments I finished I Am a Cat: I (vol. I) but am continuing to read volumes 2 & 3 in I Am a Cat. I also read the manga edition Soseki Natsume's I Am A Cat: The Manga Edition, which I really enjoyed! It covers all 3 volumes so I now know how the book ends. The manga edition loses some of the details (obviously) and the satire but it also loses some of the redundancy of the book and is a much quicker read! I think you can read just the manga and appreciate the story (and enjoy the artwork) but I do recommend the original 3 volume book, if you want a fuller experience.
