1. WHAT'S THE BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ (SO FAR) THIS YEAR?
Tenfold Tenants – EV Belknap. Loved it. Looking foward to more from this author.
2. WHAT'S THE MOST DISAPPOINTING BOOK YOU’VE READ (SO FAR) THIS YEAR?
To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini. I was hearing such good things, I set my expectations too high.
The pacing was al over the place. Sometimes it got bogged down in the science but the ending was a bit hand-wavey. I probably set it up for failure because I read it during a readathon so just pushed through when I should have put it on hold.
I’ll read the next one, because I didn’t hate TSiaSoS, and I own Fractal Noise, but I’m lowering my expectations.
3. WHAT'S THE BEST BOOK RECOMMENDATION YOU’VE RECEIVED THIS YEAR?
Not from this year, but I’m glad I finally read Sixteen Souls by Rosie Talbot. Sort of recommended by @Merrowchild on tiktok, she works in a bookshop and was constantly pushing this book in her skits and it sounded good. Turns out she’s the author but I loved it so…
From this year, probably The Haunting of Tyreese Walker by JP Rose. Was on the display at the library, which is sort of like a recommendation. Mostly I’ve been reading books already on my TBR
4. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DNF OF THE YEAR?
I don’t really track DNFs, but I returned Monochrome by Jamie Costello to the library unread. I started it, I renewed it, but I just couldn’t concentrate. I may give it another try at some point because there was nothing wrong with the book, just the wrong time.
5. A NEW RELEASE FROM THIS YEAR THAT YOU’VE READ AND YOUR THOUGHTS ON IT (GOOD OR BAD)
Moon Soul by Nathaniel Luscombe made me ugly cry, but it I loved every minute of it.
6. A BOOK THAT CAME OUT IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR THAT YOU WANT TO READ & A BOOK COMING OUT IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR THAT YOU’RE ANTICIPATING
The sequel to Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde finally came out (book one came out in 2009 and I read it in 2016). Else Cascade Failure by LM Sagas sounds right up my alley.
Looking forward to All This and More by Peng Shepherd.
7. WHAT'S THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU’VE ADDED TO YOUR COLLECTION OR A BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU’D LIKE TO OWN
I haven’t been buying physical books much, but I do have How to Become the Dark Lord or Die Trying by Django Wexler. I’m a sucker for fun typography.
I really need to replace my Lioness quartet, torn between getting the cover design that I first read, or the new box set.
8. WHAT GENRE HAVE YOU READ THE MOST FROM THIS YEAR?
Fantasy, because I’ve been reading series. But Sci-fi isn’t as far behind as I thought.
9. DO YOU FEEL YOUR READING TASTES HAVE CHANGED OR SHIFTED AT ALL THIS YEAR? (A NEW GENRE YOU LOVE, A NEW FAVORITE TROPE, OR A NEW FAVORITE THEME?)
I think I may be about to fall into the LitRPG rabbit hole? I’ve only read Wandering Inn, but I want more (less chonky) books with the levelling system and dungeon crawling. Maybe progression fantasy, I am unclear on the definitions

Smashing those series, reading the big books, reading my own books. Yay!
Not reading non-fiction. And not reading as widely as I’d like in regard to indie authors.
11. FINALLY, A BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR THIS YEAR THAT YOU FEEL EMBODIES THE VIBE OF YOUR READING YEAR
Wandering Inn by Pirateaba. Stay with me here. The premise sounded easy, someone being dropped in a new world and setting up as an innkeeper. I would’ve loved this book. What I got flipped from fun, cozy, found family, to a bit of monster hunting, to OMG everyone is going to die! My reading has flipped from middlegrade, to cozy fantasy, to murder mystery to hard sci-fi space battles to horror.

NOVEMBER
*Slow breath in and out* I don't think I'm going to meet my nonfiction goal. But that is okay! I matched last year's two, so maybe I'll beat it in December. It's just not my thing; I prefer documentaries to be visual.
I am smashing the other goals. The only one I can mess up now is the percentage of new series continued. I'm sitting at 60%, I think. I have 12(?) that I could continue right now (plus 2 that I'm waiting for the library to purchase), so as long as I don't go mad with the first books, I'm confident.

2024 in ReviewRead my owned, unread books:
I surpassed my goal of 24, but I know I bought (and didn't read) more than that. I'm a sucker for 99p kindle deals and stuff your kindle days, then the books just disappear into the blackhole of my kindle library. My physical library might have shrunk by a book or 2, at least I have space on my shelves.
I WILL continue to read my own books, both existing and ones I have yet to buy.
Continue series (re)started in 2024:
My goal was 30% an I ended up around 60%! I'm surprised considering I was reading through a couple of chonky series. I am not a binge reader (mostly), but I think I have to commit to reading sequels within a couple of months or they just drift from my memory.
Read next book in series from before 2024:
Not only did I continue more than my goal of 5, I completed 5 and caught up on 4 (2 of those may be complete, no news of further books but one implied a sequel and the other new books just appear).
2 I continued I should have caught up/completed. It was one graphic novel, it took me a while to buy but I could have knocked it out in a day. The other has 2 books left, I’ve been reading this series for 5 years, 1-2 books a year so 2025 might be the time. I want to finish it because I want to read a couple of other alternate history with dragons series but didn’t want to confuse myself.
31(!) series carrying over to 2025. I need to actually follow up on them or I risk having to start again to remember what’s going on.
Completed/up to date in series:
Completed 14 series (with 2 more unclear if there are more books). Even excluding the 3 series that were complete rereads, I beat my goal.
Up to date in another 9 (or 7 with those 2 unclear ones).
Read nonfiction
This on is a recurring goal, and I never meet it. I did match the 2 I read last year (one of which had been on my list for a long time). I the interests of not torturing myself I am just going to let this goal go. Maybe I’ll read nonfiction in 2025, but I won’t be stressing about it.
Read books over 500 pages
Smashed it. Most of these were The Wandering Inn series (not a single one under 1000 pages), but I don’t think I need to make it a goal next year. They no longer intimidate me… as long as they have an audiobook.
Read indie/self-pub books
I beat this goal. If you only count one book per author (which I switched to when I noticed it was 80% Pirateaba) I met my goal.
Will continue to explore self published and small press. Just need to curate my social media to get mor recs that aren’t romantasy (not my taste).
2024 genre trends
I still don’t understand the difference between progression fantasy and LitRPG, but I’m loving the ones I read. Will continue to find more and more into 2025 (Wandering Inn will keep me going for at least a decade).
Science fiction is back in my top genres, I’ve let it languish as fantasy series took up so much of my reading time. Now I remember why I love it I want to read more.
Cosy fantasy/ low stakes books will also continue into 2025. Sometimes I just want a happy/comforting ending.
Interestingly, my YA reading feels like its gone down, but my middle grade reading has gone up.
Nonfiction is out. Every year I beat myself up for not ‘reading to learn’, but I watch plenty of documentaries and video essays. I am not going to torture myself with this again. It is out as a goal.
31 series are carrying over to next year(!). Of those, 18 already have sequels out (but 2 I read via the library and the sequels are not available)and 8 have definite release dates in 2025. The others are up in the air.

• No more buying entire series when you haven't read the first book
• You have multiple unread books from that author, don't buy their new release
• Booktok is not a shopping list, you won't enjoy that hyped book. Know your taste
