Medieval Theme. We're looking for a book set in Medieval or Medieval-Like times. We're also going to open this up and say that any Arthur or Merlin (or similar) tales set in any time would also work. Just be sure there are paranormal elements in the book :)

DISCUSSIONS FOR THIS BOOK WILL START 1/1 - if possible have the book read by then so that we can all discuss it at the same time. Discussions will remain open so if you are late reading it you can still join in.

Timeline:
*Nominate your book through the 25th
*Voting in the polls through the 1st
*We'll know on the 2nd what our 1/2010 book will be so that gives everyone 2 months to read it.

Rules for submissions:
1. One recommendation per member
2. The book needs to still be in print & readily available.
3. Needs to fit the theme of Medieval Times

Nominations:
1. Dhampir by Barb & JC Hendee (book 1 in Noble Dead series)
2. The Bone Doll's Twin by Lynn Flewelling (book 1 in Tamir Triad)
3. Immortal Warrior by Lisa Hendrix (book 1 in Immortal Brotherhood series)
4. Doomsday Book by Connie Willis
5. Terrier by Tamora Pierce (book 1 in the Beka Cooper series)
6. Eon Dragoneye Reborn by Alison Goodman (book 1 of a duology I think)
7. The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King

I'm going to nominate Dhampir. It's the first book in a series set in Medieval Times called Noble Dead. The people know of elves but have very little interaction with them.

I don't usually nominate books I've already read but this one was REALLY good and I can't resist.

message 3: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathry) Ooo, Shanon, I very badly want to read Dhampir! I'm not going to nominate anythng else, unless we end up being short.

message 4: by ♦Jennifer♦ (new)

♦Jennifer♦ (thejenneral) Oh, I love medieval books. :D I'll nominate The Bone Doll's Twin by Lynn Flewelling. Although I'm pretty sure that I'll love any one that wins. ;)

I hadn't heard of either The Bone Doll's Twin or Immortal Warrior. I'm going to have to check them out. Nominations are always bad for my To-Read list :)

message 7: by Julia (new)

Julia | 119 comments I nominate The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis.

Doomsday Book
No witches, weres or vampires, but an *amazing* book.

message 8: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 42 comments I nominate Avincourt By Bernard Cornwell. Lots of battles with one of the Henry's

message 9: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 42 comments oooops Sorry guys I got my groups mixed up. Avincourt is an awesome book but it is historical fiction not paranormal.

I highly recommend Bone Doll's twin series. I couldn't put the books down!

message 11: by Julia (new)

Julia | 119 comments I *love* Bone Doll's Twin and Flewelling's books about Alex and Seregil. But how are they Medieval?

I recommended/ nominated The Doomsday Book. It's a book about time travel with one time period some years in our future and another in England in 1348.

I was just reading about Azincourt here. The main character has two saints talking to him, according to reviewers, so maybe that is paranormal? I haven't read it, but have read many of Cornwell's books and I love them too. And it's about a dramatic new weapon: the long bow.

I haven't read, nor am I allowed to nominate another book, but what about Eifelheim?

Hmmm... should we open up nominations to include Science Fiction???

What does everyone think?

I've liked most of the Science Fiction I've read (which hasn't been much) so I'm fine with it as long as it fits the theme of the month.

Any other thoughts?

message 13: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) Science fiction is fine with me. I'm nominating Terrier (Beka Cooper, #1) by Tamora Pierce by Tamora Pierce. Not sure if it meets the requirements. The book is in a medieval setting and there is magic. It's a YA book.

Looks good to me Paula...

Thanks for the nominations everyone! Just a few more days to nominate.

I want to say Taliesin by Stephen R. Lawhead or The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King. I don't care which they are both on my To-read list and they both seem great medieval books.

Those both look like really good books Levi =)

message 17: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathry) Just picked up a copy of Dhampir, so yeah, that's what I'm voting for. :)

Does one recommendation mean only one will be accepted?

message 19: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresainohio) Medieval is not a genre I normally read

does this book fit Eon Dragoneye Reborn

We like to have only one rec from each member so our list doesn't get too long. Does one of those books look better to you Levi??

Eon Dragoneye Reborn looks really good. I'm pretty sure it's set in an alternate medieval time so it works :)

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmm, well I already bought Taliesin, but Stephen King is so tempting so I'll go with The Eyes of the Dragon.

I'm VERY excited to announce our Medieval Themed Group Read. We'll be reading Dhampir and starting discussions on 1/1.

I've already read this book and the rest in the series. It's a great series so I'm excited to see what others think of it. I'll probably re-read Dhampir since it's been so long.

message 25: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathry) Yay!

message 26: by Audrey (new)

Audrey Cook Kolbek (audreykol) I just got Dhampir because I have seen several people on different forums say nothing but good things about the book and series. I can't wait to get started on it!

message 27: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (alyssa_hesper) Can't wait to read! I was so excited this was the book this month, I just borrowed it from a friend :)
