Lucas Davenport seems to have quite the eye for women of all types. He’s sleeping with two reporters from competing television stations and sharing secrets when it benefits him or at their prodding. He’s sleeping with the maddog witness and victim, even while he continues to sleep with Jennifer Carey, who is pregnant with his child. Your thoughts about the man versus the detective? Did this negatively effect your overall impression of him?

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments I thought he was only sleeping with one reporter. Annie (I believe that is the name of the other reporter) he lured her into being undercover, with the promise of sex. Either way, he thinks he is God's gift to women. They all seem to fall for him. The reporters want the inside scoop. It is a competitive business. Clara is the brightest of the women he is playing in this book. She knew she wasn't staying with him before she knew about Jennifer.

The detective, while unethical, is a better detective than the man. His actions didn't affect me negatively. I've met his type in my younger years. I am interested to see what he does in the next couple of books. Will he take fatherhood seriously or continue to be a dirtbag?

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments Sharon, you are right that Annie is desperately trying to get into Lucas' bed; I wish I could find the spot where he describes the quality of her brain!

My biggest problem with him was my perception that his desire to be a dad to the child he and Jennifer conceived was not enough to keep him faithful to her for even a short period of time.

In this first book of the series, Lucas does seem to be an extremely good investigator/detective. We were not given any background, if I recall, what caused the chief of police to put such a high value on his abilities.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments Charlene, I gave him a pass (sort of) because Jennifer tricked him into being a father because her biological clock was ticking. If the pregnancy was an accident, I would feel differently about his cheating. I am not a fan of cheating, but I don't like lying either. They both have questionable ethics.

~Melissa~ | 429 comments Lucas definitely thinks very highly of himself and every female in this book falls all over him - so it's no wonder he thinks this. I didn't get the appeal - except for the money and the car.

I sort of felt sorry for the reporter, Annie, she got played. Yes, Carla was the smartest of the women that we got to meet. I disliked Jennifer (more in next question)

He's a better detective than man. Granted, he definitely doesn't seem to have any boundaries when it comes to being a detective either.
