It's that time again! Let's brainstorm some fun ideas for the SpringChallenge.

The bonus theme is It's All Fun and Games: Television Game Shows

As in past challenges some tasks may revolve around the seasonal theme of winter. Others may reflect the bonus theme. Other tasks may have nothing to do with either of those themes, they’re just fun or unique ideas to stimulate your reading.

Feel free to post as many ideas as you can come up with. Don’t worry about repeating what someone else has might have already suggested. The more ideas, the better!

The moderators will draw from these ideas as well as their own to create the 5, 10 and 15 point tasks. This thread will be open for ideas until February 14. Winter tasks will begin to be posted on February 15. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Katrisa | 1396 comments Family Feud - to honor the format of choosing the most popular things - read a book that is one of the top 10 books from one of the Best Books of the Decade lists from GR

Good idea!

Meg (megscl) | 2466 comments Since many game shows require knowing a lot of facts - read a non-fiction book (excluding memoir or poetry)

Kathy KS | 2381 comments Next season brings spring flowers for some of us and fall flowers for others.

Read a book with a cover showing flowers of, at least, two different types.

Read a book on gardening/gardens, flowers, botany (MPG)

Can I Buy a Vowel - A book where the title and author name(s) contains all the vowels - A,E,I,O,U

message 20: by Tammy AZ (new)

Tammy AZ (tammyaz) | 1207 comments St. Patrick's Day is celebrated around the world. Go back to it's roots and read a book set in Ireland.

Winston Churchill made a speech and referenced the "Iron Curtain", a phrase that became famous. Read a book set in a country that was behind the Iron Curtain. (Poland, East Germany, Hungary, Romania, Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union). These countries don't all exist now so you could read a book that takes place in one of these countries or in one of the current countries that came out of the fall of the Iron Curtain.

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 1527 comments Let's Make a Deal - Contestants from the studio audience make deals to win prizes.

Option 1:
Book 1 - Typical prizes are cash, cars or zonks (booby prize). - Read a book where the word car, cash or zonk can be made from letters in the title.
Book 2 - The top contestant can trade their prize for the chance to win the grand prize behind Door 1,2 or 3. - Read a book with a door on the cover.

Option 2:
Read one book that satisfies both requirements of Option 1.

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 1527 comments Name That Tune - Contestants compete to identify songs.
Read a book whose title matches a song title or song lyric from one of these lists:

Popsugar 2021 #17 - A Book that has the Same Title as a Song

Popsugar 2023 #15 - A Book with a Song Lyric as Its Title

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 1527 comments The Host With the Most - Game shows are a popular staple of television and their hosts are important in making the shows successful. Some game shows are hosted by celebrities and others become celebrities by hosting.

Book 1: Read a book whose author has a first or last name that exactly matches one of the game show hosts on the following list. Name may be found in any position. Required: Name the game show host.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

Book 2: Read a book with a title word that exactly matches a word in the game show title in the above list. Required: Name the game show title and who hosted it.

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 1527 comments "Things Found in Spring..."

The game show Pyramid pairs 2 sets of contestants and celebrities to identify things in categories. The contestant and celebrity take turns providing clues and guessing the answers. The pair who has the most points goes on to the Winner's Circle to compete for the grand prize by correctly identifying all the categories on the pyramid board. One person gives a one-word clue or phrase to help the other figure out the category.

Read a book whose title or subtitle contains a word or phrase that describes the category: "Things That Can Be Found in Spring." Required: Identify word or phrase and provide a short explanation.

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 1527 comments Spin the Wheel of Fortune

You can be the next contestant on Wheel of Fortune. Go ahead and spin the wheel to find out which genre to read to satisfy this task. MPG of book you read must match the one you spun, standalone or embedded. Required: Identify the genre you landed on.

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 1527 comments In Memory of the Longest Running Game Show Host

Bob Barker is the king of game shows, serving as the longest running game show host. He hosted Truth or Consequences from 1956 - 1975 and The Price is Right from 1972 - 2007. He passed away in August 2023 at the ripe age of 99.

In his memory, read a book whose author has a first and last initial beginning with the same letter. Or, read a book with a page count that have 2 of the same digits consecutively.

Hannah | 448 comments * It's spring! The birds are starting to get busy building their nests... Read a book with a bird on the cover OR read a book about birds (has to be clear from main book page).

* The plants come out of hiding from under the leaves and soil, and the buds in the trees start to snap open. (If you are very quiet, you can actually hear the sound when the leaves pop out from their bud.) Read a book with a tree on the cover. A silhouette is fine too. OR read a book about trees.

* March is women's history month. Read a book with an MPG of feminism.

* April fools! Read a book with the MPG humor.

message 28: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 448 comments * A very popular game show in the Netherlands and Belgium is "Expeditie Robinson". The participants are dropped in an island, where they need to build their own shelters, forage for their own food and also compete in challenging games to prevent elimination from the game.
Read a book set at least 50% in one of the destinations (locations) for filming, on this list: Wikipedia page of Expedition Robinson

* Another very popular game show in the Netherlands is "Jachtseizoen", translated "Hunting Season", which originated on a YouTube channel, but is now a popular show on TV. Each episode, one participant (someone famous) wearing a bright orange jumpsuit gets let out of prison with a head start, and then needs to stay out of the hands of the 3 hosts, who have a car and drones, and also receive a GPS location of the participant every few minutes. Often the participant will hitchhike to get as much distance between them and their captors as possible. But a few more crafty participants have manages to flee using borrowed boats, motorbikes, bikes, jet skis and even helicopters.
Read a book with the MPG Thriller OR with a car or helicopter clearly visible on the cover.
