For our shortest month of the year, we have Mythologies by Frenchman Roland Barthes, a book under 200 pages. This collection of philosophical essays published in 1957 considers the media, fashion, politics, and overall culture of its time. Do the ideas contained within hold true today, or is this book very much a product of its time? Read it, decide, and discuss.

Nidhi Kumari | 320 comments Just started it and I am a bit confused about the details author is providing about wrestling ( ancient and modern) , he is telling about signs and tradition but mythology is yet to come in to the picture.

Mbuye | 3383 comments I've just finished reading the Roland Barthes. Compared to the second half, for which you need to be trained in linguistics or semiology or both, and have a bit of psychology to draw upon as well, the first part, a collection of random essays, is light reading. Nevertheless, it has profound insights into our daily life.

Barthes himself admits at one point that some of his ideas were those of his time only, and so declined to revise the book for another edition.
