It’s time for the next Monthly Reading Wrap Up! This Month I Read…
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller- This one was okay. The writing was well done, and the plot semi interesting. It felt a little disjointed like it was just sort of moving from one thing to the next and being forced along the way. I have to be honest that the characters didn’t stand out to me really. Patroclus had no development. His life was nothing more than being for Achilles and Achilles just got worse and almost awful. I didn’t feel the connection between them either, other than when they were in the mountains with Chiron. Those were probably the best parts for me. I did enjoy the Greek mythology angle as someone who has recently gotten into Percy Jackson though. Haha.
When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn- Ok, I did think this was a pretty cute little Bridgerton romance so I gave it a 4 star rating. However, did this even need to be a book? Haha. Am I crazy or was it not uncommon for a widow to marry a cousin or brother of her husband in those days? I don’t understand why they had to go back and forth on this when they had feelings for each on top of that. I can understand the guilt part, but it just feels out of place in the time period and in the context of the story. But cute and sweet read nonetheless.
From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home by Tembi Locke- The is a memoir of Tembi’s experience grieving the loss of her husband. She writes of grief beautifully and enjoyed hearing about her journey. Especially with how hers intertwined with her mother in law and daughters as well with food and Italian culture. My only issue was that when there was backstory it all felt out of order and disjointed from the rest. I also wanted more of it. I would have preferred a more comprehensive before journey to her story, but the after was beautiful itself. Also, fair warning; do not read this book hungry. haha.
