This spring, we're going to plant our garden with books!
You will plant flowers, vegetables, and herbs--the more things you plant, the higher the Finisher bonus!
Find your available "seeds" here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
* Only plants that are on the spreadsheet will work for this subchallenge. *
FLOWERS:
To plant flowers, all letters of the flower must be found in the title of the book (MPE). If your title allows, you can plant more than one! Just remember that each letter of the title can only be used once. So The Siege of Krishnapur can be used for two of Rose/Iris/Aster but not for all three because there are only two Rs and two Ss.
VEGETABLES:
To plant vegetables, the setting (city, state, and/or country) will start with the vegetable's letter. Any location (except Earth) works, real or fictional, as long as it is named in the text and at least 51% of the book is set there.
A book set 51%+ in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada would work for Watercress, Mung Bean, and Cucumber (you can claim all three, if you haven't claimed them before). A book set 51%+ in the fictional settlement of Liberty on Mars would work for Leek and Mung Bean. But a book set in unnamed town in an unnamed country, or set mostly at sea or travelling in space, or set in a lot of different countries all under 51%, would not work for any vegetables.
HERBS:
To plant herbs, the MPE page count will contain the number of letters in the herb's name. A page count of 170 works for Horseradish (11, counts as 1), Parsley (7), and Peppermint (10, counts as 0).
GENERAL:
Each plant can only be used once in your garden (you cannot repeat the same plant for different books in the same round).
Each book just needs to work for at least one plant that you have not claimed before. You do NOT have to claim a flower and a vegetable and a herb for every book.
You can plant the garden three times this season; once you start a new garden, all plants are available to use again.
Scoring:
+15 points, 15.1-15.10
+5 Flower Bonus (only for flowers with 8-10 letters, marked with + on the spreadsheet)
Finisher Bonuses:
+50 for up to 34 plants
+100 for 35-44 plants
+150 for 45+ plants
A few notes:
I. You cannot claim regular style points for any book you read for Ticket to Ride (nor do the TtR tasks count as combo style points for Reading with Style's 10 and 20 point tasks).
II. All books read for this sub-challenge must be at least 100 pages, based on the most popular edition.
III. For determining page numbers: The Most Popular Edition (MPE) is usually the first book that comes up when you search for the title. Alternately, you can click on the "Other Editions" link on the book cover and sort by number of ratings. Make sure that the most popular edition is an English language print edition; not an ebook, audiobook, or large print edition.
If you need help figuring out which is the MPE for a particular title, please ask in the Q&A thread.
IV. Please be aware that cookbooks, illustrated guides, and graphic novels are not allowed for the sub-challenge. Also, books designated as "YA", "Assignment", or "Juv" by the Brooklyn Public Library with a Lexile score less than 700 (or with no Lexile score) are not allowed.
