Do you ever give up on a book?

I noticed that my list contains several books that I started reading a year or more ago, but decided to dedicate my time to books I would enjoy more.
I know there are rules about when it is ok to bail on a book - 50 pages, or the difference between your age and 50.
How do you decide when to move on to a different book?
Do you think Goodreads should have an option other than "Read" or "Still Reading"? I would be interested to see how many readers did not persevere.
