Hey Y’all!

It’s that time again!

March is around the corner so if you have a suggestion for the poll that would be great.

I look forward to hearing from you 🤓

Karin | 627 comments How about Symphony of Secrets and Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder? Or if Canadian black authors are okay, Happily Ever Afters, One True Loves or Frying Plantain? The first and last of all of these suggestions are heavier than the ones in the middle. Of all of these (yes, I've just read 4/5 of them, but with my brother on liver dialysis and hoping for a transplant, I'm into lighter, faster reads for the moment, so thought I'd bring up some I've read if people want something with more depth.

Dani Quickley | 147 comments I recommend The Queen of Sugar Hill: A Novel of Hattie McDaniel, by ReShonda Tate.

Hey Karin,
Yes, Canadian authors that are Black are certainly okay. I'm not sure which book you didn't read but I'm going to add the first and the last book to the poll. Thanks for the suggestions!

Great--Frying Plantain is by a Jamaican-Canadian author, so you got one of them in there :) I knew I had too many suggestions, but wanted to put a few books in the mix.

Since I am from Canada I'm trying to get back to including more Canadian authors in my reading mix. Most of the black Canadian experience is new to me because of how few blacks live in my home province (it's 1 percent black). However, it was a Nigerian co-worker in Vancouver who is the one who busted the myth that Canadians aren't racist for me when I was 24 or 25 (how old I was when I worked there.)

Karin | 627 comments We have no chat thread, but today I found out that there has been a movie made about one of our 2022 reads, Murder in G Major. I don't usually watch Hallmark, but heard about it and may watch it. Has anyone seen it? I've read the whole series and it looks like it's going to be a film series. I found it on demand when I was looking for something else so may watch it sometime.

Murder in G Major (Gethsemane Brown Mysteries, #1) by Alexia Gordon

Tamara Mowry-Housely is starring as Gesthemane Brown.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments Has anyone read The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill? It was an excellent book by an African Canadian author. I may be interested in reading it again. If I remember correct, it actually had two titles, but I cannot remember the second title and I also believe it was a mini series. Just thought I would throw it out there. Happy reading everyone 😎

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments Someone Knows My Name is AKA The Book of Negroes.

Britney Lamar | 2 comments I saw the miniseries The book of negroes on Tubi. I have never heard of “this part of slave history” very interesting!

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments The audiobook was outstanding! I believe I am ready to read The Book of Negroes/Somebody Knows My Name again.

Not yet. However, for those who travel to Canada we, including blacks, usually either black Canadian or Afro-Canadian unless people prefer their own country if it's recent enough that they know it, such as Jamaican-Canadian, Nigerian-Canadian, etc. :) Canadians ID themselves by country/ethnic origins rather than race unless they were stripped of that information due to the travesty of US slavery (and some in Canada both before and after it was made illegal, but mostly before.)
