March 2024Mini Challenge – NATIONAL CRAYON DAY
Begins: 01Mar24 / Ends: 31Mar24

.

March 31st is National Crayon Day. So, I've taken inspiration from the original box of eight crayons I (and every other kindergartener) had in my pencil box.

Your challenge is to read books with a COVER that is at least 50% the color of one of the crayons in the original box of eight. Please be sure to check TIN EYE to verify color percentage: https://labs.tineye.com/color/

You can PICK ANY FIVE of the colors listed below. You do NOT need to pick the colors in advance; you can complete the challenge as books come your way. One book per color. A completed challenge will have five books with five different color covers.

The colors
Red
Orange
Yellow
Green
Blue
Purple / violet
Brown
Black

===========================================

Unless a variation is specified above, words must match exactly, with the following exceptions: I will accept a plural/singular version, or differences in spelling between British and American English (e.g. honor or honour). But those are the ONLY deviations allowed. So if you are looking for "gold" - I will NOT allow "golden."

All books used must be a minimum of 100 pages long - Page length determined by HARDCOVER 1st edition. If there is no Hardcover, then the most popular paperback governs page #.

You may read in any format - text, audio or e-book. If using audio or e-book I suggest using Amazon.com's "read a sample" feature to get a page number for your quote.

You MUST finish the book before you can claim credit for finding the word/phrase.

EXAMPLE of a successful post:
Red - Push by Sapphire ✔ - 12Nov23
Tin eye:
47.9 % #c81615 - Red
3.4 % #a8211d - Red
2.6 % #8a1b1c - Red

TOTAL: 53.9% Red

If you'd like to be recognized as finishing, the challenge, please post a new comment alerting me to your finish. I do not get notifications when you edit your original post.

Have Fun!

To use TIn EYE
Go to the website: https://labs.tineye.com/color/

From the book's Good Reads page,
RIGHT click on the image of the cover and select copy image link
Paste that into the Tin Eye box where it says "Enter image URL" and then click EXTRACT COLORS.

You can click "exclude background colors" to see if that makes a difference in the % that you get. !!!

You can count ALL the different colors that have your target color it in.
See example I gave above for Push by Sapphire

JennH | 119 comments Ooh, this is going to be harder than I thought it would be. I'm reading a book that I would have totally said was orange - to me, 75% of the cover is orange. And it came in at 49%! And another book I have coming up, has a black and red cover - the percentages for them came in so low! Seemed so simple but definitely a challenging challenge! Rather exciting!

You're right, Jenn. It is fun to see the percentages. Many of the results have surprised me! I put in all the books I had planned for this month and finally came up with five that qualified. Whew! I was starting to get worried. But I loved looking up each book to check on its colors :)

Yes, I had one that I would call lavender ... but TinEye called it grey.

As for the one that said 49% orange, Jenn .... did you check to see if farther down the list there was another "orange" that might give you that extra 0.1% you need to hit 50%?
