This book is a modern-day Pride and Prejudice retelling. Ayesha works as a teacher to re-pay her debts to her uncle whilst she dreams of being a poet. She seems destined to never marry, whilst her younger cousin is collecting dozens of marriage proposals. Ayesha meets Khalid, a handsome and intelligent yet conservative, religious man at the Mosque, and it is quite clear where the story is going to go from there. It was quite fun but easy to work out who was Elizabeth and Darcy, Lydia and Wickham, Mr Collins and Mrs Bennett. I also really enjoyed learning about Muslim traditions and culture, but there were just too many cheesy parts for me. It was a fun read and I liked Ayesha being portrayed as a strong woman who knew her own mind and wasn’t afraid to stand up for what she wanted, I just didn’t like it enough to want to pick up another by this author.
