Davis is a powerful storyteller and she has a story to tell. Growing up beyond poor and in a violent household full of trauma, she luckily felt the best at school even when bullied by the other kids and shamed by some of the teachers. She did all the activities and managed to find her art in drama through some great programs. Struggling with health issues, family drama and her own mental health of childhood difficulties, she has achieved much in the world of Broadway and Hollywood. I really didn't know much of Davis and I was quite moved by her story and how she told it.
It is a memoir and so there are occasional gaps but Davis' perspective and voice really propel the story. I'm glad I learned more about her and hope that she continues to flourish.
Steeplechase: Hollywood x 17; Authors of Color x 33
