Merricat belongs to one of those wealthier families in a large house on the outskirts of town with her sister Constance and infirm uncle Julian. The rest of her family were lost in an infamous dinner incident. It is unclear on relations between the family and town before the incident but it is downright hostile since so much that only Merricat ventures into town on a need only basis. Merricat is fascinating character with a very active imagination and slight eccentric tendencies requiring the same structures and schedules. When their cousin Charles comes to visit after his parents pass leaving him nothing and tries to stomp out all the structures and schedules, the house goes very awry.

Merricat is very fun and quirky POV with a villainous heart but she does her best for her beloved sister and cat Jonas and tries to be better with Uncle Julian. I found how her mind worked was quite fascinating. I couldn't quite put my finger on her sister Constance or how terrible the town people were leaving me to wonder if there was more to the relationship. Charles is utterly selfish and awful so the eventual incident is not altogether surprising but I do appreciate the final ending though I feel bad for the sisters essentially imprisoning themselves. There is so much fear on both sides.
