Nettle & Bone - T. Kingfisher

Nettle & Bone is the story about a princess who is on a quest to rescue her sister from her abusive husband, who happens to be a powerful prince. She is joined in her quest by a dust wife (a witch who talks to the dead), a disgraced knight, a fairy godmother, a dog made out of bones, and a chicken possessed by a demon. I really enjoyed this book. It had the feel of a fairy tale, but did not gloss over the dark side to being a princess. Marra is a strong female character, but she is not a chosen one...just a girl doing the best she could, determined to save her sister. The supporting characters are quirky in all the right ways and the world created by Kingfisher is mysterious and magical. It is a great read for those that like their fairy tales sprinkled with a bit of feminism.
