Martha | 2 comments Manohla Dargis of the NY Times gave Dune Part 2 a "Critic's Pick" rating.

I read Frank Herbert's epic "Dune" back before Part 1 came out, so I'm absolutely stoked to see the story play out in Part 2.
As Sci-Fi fans, sometimes we see our favorite books adapted to screen/TV successfully, sometimes, not so much.
(For example, Amazon's "The Man in the High Castle" based on Philip K. Dick's novel of the same name had a promising start, but then it went too far afield for my taste).
When you've seen the film, feel free to review it with your Speculative Fiction chops here...

Has anyone seen Dune 2 yet? Thoughts.

Kandice | 271 comments I am almost embarrassed to admit I saw it twice this weekend! Once with my daughter and then again alone. I loved it! It's been one of my favorite books since the 70s, and I've loved each of the adaptations for different reasons, but Villeneuve's is just gorgeous, and the music is amazing.

Rick | 260 comments Saw it last Thursday. Epic. I can pick a few nits here and there, but it puts to shame almost any SF movie I can think of.

Martha | 2 comments Well, I'm definitely making it to the cinema to see this!
I thought "Arrival" (2016) was absolutely amazing (from the novella by Ted Chiang "Story of Your Life"), so I knew we were in for a treat when I heard way back when that Denis Villeneuve was taking on the film adaptation of "Dune"!!!

Phrynne Loved it! This was one of my favourite books longer ago than I care to remember and I thought this was a tremendous version of it. The special effects are very well done - the worms are terrific! Definitely go and see it:)

Ivan Darryl | 39 comments I have just watched the movie, and it was captivating all around. I didn't expect it to be frightening, and I'm glad I was surprised at that.

I'm looking forward to Part Three because it will be covering Dune Messiah, which is an impressive book sequel. A personal fav of mine as it is dramatic up to its conclusion.

I saw it Thursday and Saturday. I also love the other adaptations and it is still my favorite Science Fiction book

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Lynch's Dune has a lot going for it. Especially when you remember when it was made and the circumstances under which it was edited.

I had never read the book until after I saw the David Lynch movie and fell in love with it. I watched it last week too.

Bobby Durrett | 234 comments I saw it with my daughter. I got a little distracted by the differences between the book and the movie but I thought it was very good overall.

message 12: by J (new)

J Eckhardt | 5 comments I wasn't a fan of the first part. I feel the '84 movie did a better job of introducing and condensing the story. I haven't seen part two yet, but I expect it to be better since it's the more action-filled part of the story.

message 13: by David (last edited Mar 26, 2024 08:38AM) (new)

David L | 39 comments I love all the adaptations including the miniseries. Lynch included elements Villeneuve did not in under 3 hours. The spacing guild is almost totally absent in the latest version. The importance of spice is marginalized other than being a money maker. Mentats as human computers hardly remarked. Better CGI and a lot longer run time and I’m not sure it’s better. I always loved Lynch’s over the top Baron Harkonnen and Sting as Feyd too.

I love Christopher Walken, but Ferrer was a much better Emperor.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2790 comments There are some parts I could nitpick but overall it was an audio visual feast thanks to Villeneuve and Zimmer. Very well casted too. I might watch it again in IMAX.

message 15: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Lynch all the way. Apologies to those who enjoyed the movie, but Villeneuve is very fortunate. He is more suited to being a wedding photographer, but fortunately for him there is far less competition in Hollywood's current messy landscape than in wedding planning.

And why are modern blockbusters so long now? A slow and better movie like 2001 A Space Odyssey was and felt shorter than commercial movies.

message 16: by Ambereyes (new)

Ambereyes | 100 comments Good movie, but I missed Alia. She's one of my favourite characters and she was practically non-existent in the movie.

message 17: by Sue (new)

Sue McKerns | 25 comments I haven't seen it, but reading comments from Ambereyes and David above, it sounds like a lot of important parts of the story were left out. To make room for the audio-visual movie components as opposed to the telling of the story? I've read (and re-read) the trilogy, watched the Lynch version countless times, and even the miniseries. There is so much to the Dune story it can never all be captured in any format other than the books. If I'm going to watch a Dune movie, I think I'll pass on this and stick with Lynch.
