Val I nominate I Am China by Xiaolu Guo

It looks intriguing from the reviews:

The Guardian thinks it was worth reviewing twice:

The Independent's reviewer did not like it much:

I'd like to nominate

It follows 3 very different women who have all suffered in their lives and whose paths now cross. This is a debut novel by Jemma Wayne .

Val I was intending to set up the poll today.
Are there any more nominations before I do?
I see the nomination for The Walk Home by Rachel Seiffert is no longer in the thread. Do you want me to include it?

Hi Val, can I make a suggestion (feel free to disregard!). The shortlist is due to be announced on the 13th, Monday. I know that list will influence what I want to read in June, and it might for others too. Could we leave nominations open for a few more days and see what's included there?

message 6: by Jayme (new)

Jayme I would like to second Jen. I am waiting to see what makes the short list before I read anything :)

message 7: by Val (new)

Val I will leave this thread open until next Tuesday and set up the poll then.

message 8: by Juniper (new)

Juniper (jooniperd) | 343 comments that's great, val -- good idea, jen! :)

message 9: by Val (new)

Val I understand Michelle. Nominate it another month, when you have more time.

message 10: by Lagullande (new)

Lagullande | 76 comments Well, I have read 4 of the longlist, and they are all now on the shortlist!! One of the remaining 2 is The Bees, which we've already voted for May, so I better nominate the last one A Spool of Blue Thread.

Val If anyone has not seen the shortlist, the announcement is here:

I will open the vote later today. Please add any further nominations now, or save them for the July thread.

Val The June book will be A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler.

Would anyone like to volunteer to lead the discussion?

I put up the nomination, but I am well down the reservation list at the library so I'm not sure when I will get a copy (which is why I didn't actually vote in the poll). Maybe better if someone else can take it on.

As an aside, I've just finished The Bees - 5 stars from me!

message 14: by Val (new)

Val I'm waiting for my turn at the library for A Spool of Blue Thread as well.
The Bees is 'in transit' to my branch, so I should get it in the next few days.

That's great, I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I just used an audiobook credit to get The Beesthis, and hope to start over the next few days. I'll be honest, it really didn't appeal to me when I first heard / read about it - I'm hoping my instincts were wrong and your response is encouraging to me!

If the "science fiction" or "dystopia" tag is the problem, then I promise you can stop worrying. I liked it so much because I thought it such an imaginative story. All the way through, it was going to be a 4 stars, and then the last page made me well up (call me sentimental) and the extra star was earned. I hope you enjoy it as much.

Well, I did manage to get my copy from the library and I have just finished it. Still not sure about offering to moderate though - I would be ok posting a few links to reviews/book group questions, but don't feel I would add much insight from a literary point of view.
