Hooray for SPRING!!! Bees buzzing, Birds chirping, Flowers blooming… New life everywhere! (You can tell the spring weather has reached my hometown.) Lots of books to be read when we come in from the garden (or to be heard while tilling the soil, if you’re an audio-fan). So let’s get to nominating some Victorian Lit for the spring!

Please post your nominations here.
One nomination per person and per author.
Nomination thread will be up for one week or until we reach eight nominations. Then there will be a poll for voting. If possible, please include the link to the book you've nominated.

Eligible nominations should be written and published in Great Britain between 1837 and 1901.

PLEASE check the link below…

Janet Smith (janegs) | 167 comments The Mystery of Edwin Drood, by Charles Dickens. It is the only Dickens novel. I've not yet read at least once. And I do plan to read it this year, and it would be fun to do it with a group.

one reason for the nomination is that the Elizabeth Gaskell House has a Wives and Daughters focus this year, with a number of (online!) lectures - would be a great accompaniment to a group reading. One lecture is on March 20, about "Missing Mothers" in Victorian literature.

Leslie | 1 comments I see two Dickens novels are nominated already. Since he is my favorite author, my vote is for any of his novels.

This looks wonderful and I am always delighted to find a new Victorian author. However, although Amelia B. Edwards published during the Victorian Era, this particular collection was only published in 1999, and might be difficult for our members to obtain. Let me confer with the other Moderators to see if we can come up with a solution. (Perhaps a list of her short stories which are available through the Gutenberg Project.)

We already have a nomination for Dickens and are reading Barnaby Rudge in November/December. Would you like to nominate something else?

We have two nominations for Wives and Daughters. You are welcome to nominate something else if you choose.

message 16: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 173 comments Renee, I nominated David Coppers because it is my favorite and I think it’s greatest novel. I really don’t want to substitute anything else. If you can’t use the nomination this time, I understand.

message 17: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 173 comments Stupid auto-correct. I meant David Copperfield, of course.

Dear Members,
It is not necessary to second (or third) a nomination.
Your enthusiasm is appreciated, and I hope that you will apply it by voting for your favorite choice in the upcoming poll.
Thank you.
~Renee

After some consideration, this nomination will be reserved from the voting poll. I have concerns that members may not be able to acquire either the collection or the stories individually in order to participate.

We may have a few weeks in the Fall before reading Barnaby Rudge, when we may have the opportunity to read some of the more well-known, and accessible stories by Amelia B. Edwards. In researching the author, I read “The Phantom Coach” and found it delightfully spooky. Thank you for calling this author to my attention.

Hello, Dear Vics!

Based on the recent poll, your Mods have mapped out the books we will be reading over the next several months.

May-June: The Mystery of Edwin Drood
July-Aug: Wives and Daughters
September-ish: Ghost Stories by Amelia B. Edwards
Oct-Dec: Barnaby Rudge

Right now the dates are a rough estimate, but this list will give you time to acquire your books and rev your anticipation. :)
