Felina | 2416 comments Aaahhhh I’m so excited about this one and I’m still a 3 week wait at my library. Both this and Jade City are killing me. But I’ve been able to catch up on Discworld and Stephanie while I wait so I guess that’s good.

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5358 comments I just picked this one up from the library but I can wait for more people to read it before I start.

Nirkatze | 21062 comments Running late but excited!

Felina | 2416 comments I’m upset! I just discovered this is free on audible and I’ve been waiting on a library copy. Looks like the first couple are free. Starting now.

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5358 comments Yay! I've been waiting for others to start in order to start it myself. I am juggling 2 other audiobooks right now but hope to start it this weekend.

Ann-Marie | 5458 comments I was thinking I would start this next and this settles it! Should be here at some point today :)

Felina | 2416 comments I’m about 15% in and it’s interesting. I haven’t read any of his other series which he explains isn’t necessarily to understand. So far so good.

Been clicking through all the BR links for this same reason. Don't want to be the first one to start and now I don't have to, yay!

I'm curious--one recurring... gag? maybe? in this series is (view spoiler) I actually found this kinda jarring and annoying, but I'm curious what others think... also curious to find if I still find it so on a reread. Not really spoilery but putting it in spoilers just in case.

Rereaders only, spoiler thoughts. (view spoiler)

It’s not my favorite part of the “lore” but I don’t mind it that much

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5358 comments I just started. I love the reactions Malcom has to Raith’s superstitions.

Nirkatze | 21062 comments Thank you @Diana! I thought so--rereader spoiler reply. (view spoiler)

I'm through Chapter 13 now, and mostly just floating and enjoying. (view spoiler)

Felina | 2416 comments I’m at chapter 18. I’m definitely enjoying this but I’m getting character names mixed up. I had to go to wiki to confirm what’s happening. I wish everybody had normal names. Sam is the God Killer and Mark is the slave dude who helped him, etc.

So far I think this book has good characterization. I’m not remembering names but based on how people are acting and what they are saying, I know who they are.

I loled at “Sam is the God Killer and Mark is the slave dude”. The names are def easier to remember as you get used to them. I have this issue a lot with audiobooking fantasy books and keeping the characters straight.

I thought the God Killer was named Rafe? Ugh, I definitely need to look at a character list!! Looking for that list...

Typing up a little list for reference, some spoilers for first half of book or so: (view spoiler)

Felina | 2416 comments No, I’m not being sarcastic. (view spoiler)

But yes, lots of dead kids. 🫤

Felina | 2416 comments Ha ha. I read your spoiler and we are talking about the same thing.

And I also laughed at that tree quote. I really like that character. That girl with the wolf. I also like when her and the other lady have conversations and she keeps getting confused about when to use I and Me.

LOL ditto! I love how Suri says "are you sure?" My students ask me that sometimes on language things and I'm like "um... yes. You're doing it wrong. Me and my 30+ years of experience are very sure."

I also appreciate your perspective on the mother-aspect in the book... I was focusing too much on the death and not enough on the feelings...

Felina | 2416 comments Yeah. The essence of motherhood is manifest in the difficult things. Moms are great for the fun and games but there’s a reason a soldier injured in the battlefield calls for his mother. And I, sadly, feel my love so much stronger for my son when he needs comforting or when I hear stories of loss from other mothers. Wesley is 8 now and 50% of the time he annoys me to death but I love the little turd so much.

Nirkatze | 21062 comments I love how you put that, Felina... such an experience full of contradictions and extremes....

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5358 comments I am still only about 20% through. But I love the reaction Malcolm had when Raith used the Tetlin Witch in his slang swear (series spoiler) (view spoiler)

Those little bits make rereading such a treasure.

Felina | 2416 comments I have no read the series but I do read spoilers especially when I feel like I’m entering a world I’m going to really like.

Ann-Marie | 5458 comments I am through chapter 19 and liking it so far, although I do miss Royce & Hadrian. I agree that keeping the characters straight was touch & go for a bit but I am good now (I think). I am loving the strong female characters for sure! Definitely do not expect to finish tonight but should wrap it up tomorrow easily.

Felina | 2416 comments I just finished this a very much enjoyed it. I really liked all the characters and was very surprised at a lot of the reveals. I usually can sniff out a plot pretty easily and I didn’t see this one coming. Looking forward to the next one.

Nirkatze | 21062 comments I actually thinking I like the women in this series more than in Revelations. Maybe it's Sullivan getting more experience... not that I don't enjoy Arista & Thrace especially, but they've always felt a little... off... to me. Can't put a finger on it. I like Persephone a lot though--especially at the end when (view spoiler) And Suri--Arion, Moya, Brin, Roan... a really nice selection of ladies.

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Oooooh excited to see some strong female characters coming up!

Just brace yourself for some strong mother stuff.

Felina | 2416 comments Agreed. There are great female characters in this books.

I think in a lot of books or movies, writers think making a strong female character is just making a woman act like a man or making a woman a Mary Sue. Women are different than Men and exhibit strength in different ways. I felt like the women in this book were strong female characters because they were not interchangeable with our male characters. And, sometimes female characters are stereotypes of women instead of real women. These woman are also not interchangeable with each other. The characterization is excellent in this book because each character had its own voice. Like is said earlier, I couldn’t ever remember anybody’s name but I could always tell who I was reading about based on what they said, how they said it and what they did and how they did it.

Ann-Marie | 5458 comments Just finished and I really enjoyed it quite a lot! It was good from the start but by the end it was right there with the first series for me! (view spoiler)

Yes this! This book has great female characters who are female and great. It isn't just a rewrite of men roles.

I'm half way through and my god I forgot how much I absolutely loved Raith. He was legit my book boyfriend for a while. Series spoiler(view spoiler)

This is my first reread of this series and boy am I catching a lot. He wrote the whole series before he got it published so the whole thing makes sense and is lacking the on-the-fly plot holes of a series written as you go (I'm looking at you ACOTAR) and you can really tell in the foreshadowing and small character reactions to certain things.

message 41: by Nirkatze (new) - added it

Nirkatze | 21062 comments Hear hear! I love @Felina's character analysis, @Ann-Marie's ending reactions, and @Diana's book writing system comparison... also Raith is pretty awesome...

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5358 comments Just finished. Ugh. I love this book more than the first time. I absolutely loved the ending. How emotional it was. And absolutely adored how (view spoiler). So glad I decided to do the reread.

Agree. I remember being lukewarm on the series the first read through--these definitely age even better with reread.

Same. I liked the book the first time but I didn't love it as much as I do now. I think it was because I missed Royce and Hadrian. But the foreshadowing and easter eggs are absolutely doing it for me.

Thanks! I can't seem to escape that particular theme. I think it might be a more common thing people write about than I realized before now!

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Will be back here after Fallen

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments WOW that was a pretty great read for me! The ending was pretty intense (view spoiler)Couldn't put it down.. I think I caught some of the twists like (view spoiler)

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5358 comments It always makes me happy to watch someone become a Sullivan fan. I love his books so much 😅

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Yeah I really enjoyed the Riyria Chronicles, but I think I might have liked this one even more!

message 50: by Nirkatze (new) - added it

Nirkatze | 21062 comments I'm just continually amazed at how much a reread has changed my feelings for these books--I keep saying it, but it keeps surprising me... I remember being lukewarm on first readthrough, both of Riyria and of Legends... but rereads... it's very rare to find something that ages so well--something where a reread is even better than first discovery.
