The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins

Please discuss here and remember to use spoiler tags as needed, as everyone reads at different speeds and may start at different times.

When Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore dies, she’s not only North Carolina’s richest woman, she’s also its most notorious. The victim of a famous kidnapping as a child and a widow four times over, Ruby ruled the tiny town of Tavistock from Ashby House, her family’s estate high in the Blue Ridge mountains. In the aftermath of her death, that estate—along with a nine-figure fortune and the complicated legacy of being a McTavish—pass to her adopted son, Camden.

But to everyone’s surprise, Cam wants little to do with the house or the money—and even less to do with the surviving McTavishes. Instead, he rejects his inheritance, settling into a normal life as an English teacher in Colorado and marrying Jules, a woman just as eager to escape her own messy past.

Ten years later, Camden is a McTavish in name only, but a summons in the wake of his uncle’s death brings him and Jules back into the family fold at Ashby House. Its views are just as stunning as ever, its rooms just as elegant, but coming home reminds Cam why he was so quick to leave in the first place.

Jules, however, has other ideas, and the more she learns about Cam’s estranged family—and the twisted secrets they keep—the more determined she is for her husband to claim everything Ruby once intended for him to have.

But Ruby’s plans were always more complicated than they appeared. As Ashby House tightens its grip on Jules and Camden, questions about the infamous heiress come to light. Was there any truth to the persistent rumors following her disappearance as a girl? What really happened to those four husbands, who all died under mysterious circumstances? And why did she adopt Cam in the first place? Soon, Jules and Cam realize that an inheritance can entail far more than what’s written in a will—and that the bonds of family stretch far beyond the grave.

Kristie | 5929 comments I really enjoyed this one! You don't really like the characters, but it keeps you interested and wanting to know more. There are little twists all along the way. There are also newspaper clippings included and I thought they were used well. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone else thinks of it.

I gave it 4+ stars. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Kim (kim808) | 1 comments Your review was very helpful, Kristie! I was considering reading this because I enjoy mysteries and found the first few pages interesting, but I am one of those who needs a likable protagonist to enjoy a book. Not for me, unfortunately!

Sorry it won't work for you, Kim! I understand that though. Sometimes when I dislike my characters and have no one to root for it ruins the story for me. Other times, I'm just so curious that it doesn't bother me much. In this one, I ended up really enjoying it.

Sarah ✧.* (cornishpixies) | 6 comments Finished this in a few days, way faster than I expected. I appreciated that it was an easy read because this is the first book I've finished in a while. But I felt the story was rushed and key points were revealed very quickly.

(view spoiler)

I thought it was a good read but could have been more developed & drawn out, especially in the suspenseful moments. I was disappointed it didn't live up to my expectations. ):

My review.

Jamie (little_birdie) | 44 comments this was a quick one! I didn't feel connected to any of the characters, but there were some fun twists throughout.

Emily Pritchard | 3 comments Just hit 23% and I have so many questions, I’m enjoying it but it definitely keeps you thinking!

Sarah | 46 comments Just finished this one last night. Found it a little slow in the beginning but it picked up when we got to hear from Ruby. Definitely enjoyed it more than her other book Reckless Girls. I thought it was more of a family drama than a thriller.

Sarah Skavnak | 199 comments I loved this book and highly recommend the audiobook. The book is fast paced and all the characters vile and not to be trusted!

message 15: by Carol (new)

Carol (fleter) | 306 comments For me this was a 2.5-3 star read. Started with great promise; it just ended up too twisty for my taste by the end of the book. More of an eye-roller than suspense by the end for me. Saw a comment re: being more drama than suspense and I agree with that. I will seek out other books from this author.

Sarah | 46 comments Totally agree Carol this was a family drama not an overall thriller. Her other book Reckless Girls was more of a thriller.
