I think the first time I heard about this author & series is through another 'classic' book I was reading quite a number of years ago now. My curiosity was piqued especially when I found out that author is actually from New Zealand. That is primarily my reason for reading this book. I was a tad disappointed to find out that it's set in England...
On that note, the book fits the 'Golden Age Mystery' tag perfectly. The setting is mostly in a country home and the crime was committed at the beginning of a house party where they were going to play the game, 'Murders'. Then enter, Chief Inspector-Detective Alleyn, detective extraordinaire! "What was the god up to now?" was a line of thought from one of his subordinates. In the end, there was a bit about Russian conspiracies & seditions though the murder is something completely separate with a classic but somewhat dispassionate motive.
It was an easy read as I found it quite similar to Christie's in setting & characterisations and even some plotting with the romance. However, I'm not sure whether it's my strange mood or something else but I expected to enjoy a classic mystery but found that I didn't, really.

Tien, I've read many of the books in this series. I think most are set in England, but the fifth book Vintage Murder has Inspector Alleyn visiting New Zealand. For some reason they let the visiting cop solve the mystery.
