Shelly | 939 comments I enjoyed this classic adventure story! I couldn't wait to find out Mr. Fogg's next solutions to his transportation woes as the clock kept ticking on his journey around the world. I thought his man-servant Passepartout was the perfect side kick and trouble-maker. I did cringe sometimes at his language when describing people from other cultures. I also foresaw the ending, but that didn't make it less enjoyable. Now I am left to consider, how long would a journey around the world take in 2024? And what options are available now that had not been invented in 1870s. Maybe I should look for that reality show Amazing Race. Maybe the idea came from this book, published in 1872.

Actually Michael Palin redid it in late 1980s and shot it as a documentary, plus there is an accompanying book. It was the first of what became a series of travel documentaries he did based on themes and all are superb.

If you factor out flying, which he did, it really is just about the same timing - at least in 1989.

I highly recommend watching it. The book is just a companion, but still worth a peek. Around the World in 80 Days: Companion to the Pbs Series.

I love this novel by Jules Verne. I, who does't care for audiobooks even has it in audio for long trips - because read by Jim Dale. The classic movie adaptation, which added the balloon ascension, was just aired on TCM. But the mini-series version starring Pierce Brosnan is wonderful. I have yet to manage more than 15 minutes of the Jackie Chan adaptation - it is so bad yet airs all the time. ☹️

I do love this story!
