Jen K | 3143 comments A memoir written by Hemingway mostly about his life living in Paris when he was just starting his career, first while paying the bills as a journalist and then when trying to focus just on writing. The work was published posthumously and this version was restored by his son to add in some pieces missing in the first version.

Hemingway has a small studio for writing but also spent much time in cafes for writing, sharing that one had to keep the favorite writing cafes secret to not be disturbed. Hemingway's descriptions of Paris are gorgeous and winters away skiing in the Alps and summers in Spain for the bulls. He had an interesting relationship with his first wife and they raised their first son in Paris for a good bit until he transitioned onto the second wife. Hemingway writes very honestly and very respectfully of his wives putting all blame on himself. He also writes interesting vignettes with other famous writers of the time and in Paris. He writes of his addiction to horse racing and other views there were not so favorable to himself but he does write well. I enjoyed a glimpse of life as a writer in Paris.

Steeplechase: Cities x 10
