Leo is staying with a school friend over summer when he finds himself acting as the messenger between Marian, his friend’s beautiful older sister and Ted, a local farmer. As the book continues, we see Leo lose his innocence as he becomes drawn deeper into Marian and Ted’s game, manipulated by Marian’s charm and feeling out of his depth. The book is narrated by Leo, both as a child and then as an older man recalling the events of that summer. I thought that it was a beautifully written story, and it was interesting to see England at the term of the century through the eyes of a young boy. I had previously seen an adaptation of this book so I knew the plot, but I liked that despite knowing the outcome, the book was written in a way that I looked forward to finding out what would happen in the next chapter.
