Tr1sha | 336 comments Several members have commented about lack of time, so this challenge gives lots of choice & a chance to read something that helps with other challenges too. Remember that taking part is optional, classic books or short stories are permitted.

The choices are:

1 Read The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim

2 Read any classic which is set in Italy or another European country

3 Spell out one or more of these words (using first letter of title, author’s first name, author’s surname)
ENCHANTED
APRIL
ITALY

4 If you still have unread books that you chose for the March gardening challenge you could read one of them in April

What to read? This list isn't even firm enough to be called a plan. Maybe ... three books set in Europe?

Lady Windermere's Fan by Oscar Wilde (1892) 84 pages - partially set in a garden
Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1625), 1026 pages (ha!) - He trapses all over the countryside
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë (1848), 576 pages - also quite long - the Garden at Wildfell Hall is supposed to have symbolic significance in this book.

Maybe a couple of short stories?
The Beauties by Anton Chekhov (1888)

I would like to read more by John Wyndham because I think The Day of the Triffids is so much fun.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments Rosemarie i loved that book and the photo on the cover is so dreamy!

Kathy and Tr1sha I have read a couple Elizabeth Peters, but not that one - yet!

Lynn you could always read The Chrysalids (1955) - John Wyndham
A chrysalid, or chrysalis, is something likely to be found in an Italian garden

That one does look good. Also, I haven't started [book:Out of Africa

2."Read any classic which is set in Italy or another European country."I'm currently plodding through The Giants of French Literature : Balzac, Flaubert, Proust, and Camusand so have decided to use this challenge to try out a little of the reading suggested by Katherine L. Elkins the professor engaged for the course.I really enjoyed doing this with a similar course on Russian classics a few years ago. Not sure how many I'll manage but I know I'll not be attempting Proust in a month!

Nike I chose this a month ago when I saw it on your TBR list-it's a super book-a real eye opener about what life was like in Germany in the war. This was a new author for me -many thanks for the inspiration!

Wow! How great that I could inspire by a writer I haven't read yet! ʘ‿ʘ

It is a European classic and a friend of mine has described the book as one of the most outstanding books he has ever read - and he has read a lot. Your comment makes me looking forward to reading it even more! (✿ ♡‿♡)

Lynn (lynnsreads) | 164 comments Well, exciting things are happening. I had thought I might work a couple of more years, but after some financial consulting I have decided to retire! There is just a lot of work to it. I am skipping reading anything this month until things are settled. I will finish this school year and perhaps be a substitute in the future. It's a good move to make, and I am happy.

Happy retirement! I was a substitute teacher and the flexibility is great, and time for yourself when the work day is over.
Another benefit is being able to go on holiday in the off-peak seasons-and more time to read.

Chad | 66 comments Congratulations, Lynn! I’m extremely jealous.
I’ve gotten past the halfway mark in The Garden of the Finzi-Continis and it really is a wonderful story. I would normally read nonfiction about this subject so this is really wonderful.
