Hey Y’all!

It’s that time again!

April is around the corner so if you have a suggestion for the poll that would be great.

I look forward to hearing from you 🤓

How to Say Babylon

Looks good! Is there a theme for April?
I'd like to propose another historical novel, with elements of magical realism: Ours by Phillip B. Williams.

There’s no special theme this month but the group’s theme is Black historical fiction. Sometimes we go outside of historical fiction.

Great suggestions so far. If you have more feel free to post them. The first five books will go on the poll 🤓🤓

Karin | 627 comments If that's our theme, then I'd love to nominate something else by James McBride. Have we ever read Song Yet Sung? This is my favourite book by him, so if we haven't I'd like to nominate that. Or if it's been long enough that we can read it again. For me he's the king of historical fiction sprinkled with magical realism although, to be fair, this one is more amazing visions of the future. I'd be happy to read this a third time because it is going to be brilliant every single time, IMO.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments Song Yet Sung is my favorite book by McBride also. I would love to read it again.

Matthew McElroy | 51 comments I just bought a copy of Passing by Nella Larsen ($6 at the Met? Who knew that was possible?)
But, I'm up for anything, especially James McBride.

So this is what the homepage says regarding theme, "This group focuses on books written by or about black people from all continents in many different genres though we focus on historical fiction and classics." from the time I joined the group I believe we've stuck to the general theme.

Yes, I was just responding to a question and thought it would be fun to go with that because it made me think of Song Yet Sung.

Hey Group!

So, a winner was chosen and it's How to Say Babylon by Safiya Sinclair. I created the thread and added the link below.

I can't wait to read your thoughts on the book.

Happy reading 🤓🤓

I don't know much about Rastafarian culture so I'm looking forward to learning something new.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I’m looking forward to it.

Karin | 627 comments I'm still deciding if I'll read this book this month, but do want to read it now that I've heard about it. I've read memoirs about strict control of clothing and women's purity in different religions in various parts of the world, but none by a woman in a strict Rastafari sect.
