Catherine (semi active) | 3067 comments First off- don't call it "One Corinthians" instead of "First Corinthians" like Trump called 2 Corinthians "Two Corinthians" 😂😂😂 Sorry I just had to say that.

Anyway, 1 Corinthians has 16 chapters. Here are some ways you can participate:

✿ Just read 1 Corinthians at your own pace and share your thoughts with us!

✿ 🅅🄴🅁🅂🄴 🄼🄴🄼🄾🅁🄸🅉🄰🅃🄸🄾🄽 🄲🄷🄰🄻🄻🄴🄽🄶🄴
Here's a list of 21 completely AWESOME verses from 1 Corinthians, numbered 1-21 here (there are also verse memorization tips and other verses I really like): https://docs.google.com/document/d/1e...

Choose 9 of them (or any other verses you’d like, from 1 Corinthians or not) to put in this bracket according to which number it is:

[ _ ] [ _ ] [ _ ]
[ _ ] [ _ ] [ _ ]
[ _ ] [ _ ] [ _ ]

When you memorize a verse, put an X in the bracket. Try to get 3 in a row, then another 3 in a row, then maybe even a blackout! Post your bracket here and update us on how you’re doing.

✿ Youversion plans

Find Youversion plans on 1 Corinthians here: https://www.bible.com/search/plans?qu...

I’ll also start these plans on Youversion. I found a verse-by-verse 5 part plan on Youversion that I like, but there are a lot of devotionals, so I'm going to do 3 devotionals a day. Don't feel obligated to do all of the devos/plans!

Please add me as a friend if you haven’t already- I’m Catherine C and my profile’s the same as the one on GR, or you can tell me what your profile is (if you haven’t made a free account on Youversion yet, sign up HERE! https://www.bible.com/sign-up)

Catherine (semi active) | 3067 comments I tried out the BibleProject course today and I'm not sure I like it very much 😂 The videos also take forever to load unfortunately. I think I'll abandon that...

I started reading Enduring Word's Bible Commentary and summarized some points I thought were cool here! https://docs.google.com/document/d/13...

Janice | 74 comments I had no idea Trump said that!

Do I need to know what verses I plan to memorize ahead of time? I thought what I would do is to read 1 Corinthians, hopefully every day, and if a verse speaks to me I would work on memorizing it. Is that allowed?

Haha yeah! I think this is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EIgH...

(I'm not sure though Youtube is taking wayy too long to load. I'm gonna have to shut down my computer XD)

No, not at all!! That would be awesome! For sure, I'm just happy that you're memorizing verses 😛 Let us know which verses you decide to memorize/how it goes!

Yay Elisabeth, thanks for participating!! I hope you have a good hiatus and are able to do everything you need to get done. Will miss you ❤

I love those verses too!

Catherine (semi active) | 3067 comments I made this a little while ago, but I thought I'd share it for fun, since this is one of the verses I'm memorizing:

message 9: by Elijah (new)

Elijah Z. (elijah6734) | 79 comments Amen!

Catherine (semi active) | 3067 comments :D

Yay, 3 verses down, 6 to go!

What's stuck out to me so far is the phrase "Christ crucified." It wasn't until I read the commentary on 1 Corinthians 1:23 ("but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles") that it really stuck with me. Pulling from Enduring Word:

"Instead of giving the Jews and Greeks what they demanded in deliverance and wisdom, God gave them something unexpected: a crucified Messiah.

Christ (Messiah) meant power, splendor, and triumph. Crucified meant weakness, defeat, and humiliation. Christ crucified was the ultimate oxymoron, and this was what Paul preached!

Let every pulpit rightly say, “we preach Christ crucified!” A strong church once inscribed these words on an archway leading to the churchyard. Over time, two things happened: the church lost its passion for Jesus and His gospel, and ivy began to grow on the archway. The growth of the ivy, covering the message, showed the spiritual decline. Originally it said strongly, we preach Christ crucified. But as the ivy grew, one could only read we preach Christ, and the church also started preaching “Jesus the Great Man” and “Jesus the Moral Example” instead of Christ crucified. The ivy kept growing, and one could soon only read, we preach. The church also had even lost Jesus in the message, preaching religious platitudes and social graces. Finally, one could only read we, and the church also just became another social gathering place, all about we and not about God."

Catherine (semi active) | 3067 comments Another verse that stuck out to me is 1 Corinthians 10:31: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

What does it mean to glorify God in whatever I do? How do I glorify God in simple, everyday things, like eating and drinking? Does it simply mean giving thanks to God and remembering Him in whatever I do?

Catherine (semi active) | 3067 comments Blackout, yay! Reminder that we're starting the plan, 1 Corinthians 10-13 (https://bible.com/p/65793308/9b623eb6...), today! Feel free to join if you haven't read the previous plans:)

Catherine (semi active) | 3067 comments @Danielle Yay!! Thanks for participating:))

Catherine (semi active) | 3067 comments Last plan we're starting today: 1 Corinthians 14-16! https://bible.com/p/65793283/f2bd62b9...

Janice | 74 comments I am running behind and most likely won't finish by the end of this month, but I am going to continue reading 1 Corinthians until I finish.
So far I have one verse from 1 Corinthians that I want to memorize: 1 Corinthians 1: 7-9 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
I will be working on this as I have started memorizing it yet.

Catherine (semi active) | 3067 comments That's great! And that's an awesome verse. I'm going to add that to my list:) Let us know your thoughts as you read!

message 21: by Angieleigh (new)

Angieleigh | 35 comments I am finishing up part 5 probably tomorrow or the next day at the latest!

It's been quite a challenge reading all five parts of 1Corinthian for the month, plus Read the NT in 60 days, which I finish up tomorrow, and my bible in a year through Bible Recap.

Catherine (semi active) | 3067 comments Yay!! I think I've only done the first couple of days of part 5, but hopefully I'll finish them up in the next couple of days 😄

WOW! I am thoroughly impressed. Reading just all 5 parts of 1 Corinthians was a challenge for me! That's AWESOME, Angie! :)

message 25: by Elijah (new)

Elijah Z. (elijah6734) | 79 comments Finished 1 Corinthians 1-8.

I especially enjoyed the part where Paul wrote on the distinction between human wisdom and God's wisdom. Those who do not know the Gospel think that God's Word is foolishness, yet we who know the Truth understand that God's Word is filled with wisdom and that true wisdom comes only from God. As I read the first four chapters, I felt a challenge to spend more time reading my Bible in order to gain a better understanding of God's commandments. David wrote, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom." Such wisdom cannot be found in philosophy books, self-help books, or psychology books. Applying God's principles into my life and daily coming ever nearer to Him is the way I can acquire wisdom.

Catherine (semi active) | 3067 comments Nice! So true. Recently, I've been constantly reminded of my need for God's wisdom. As the song goes, "If I could have anything, let it be your eyes on me. Every time I catch your gaze, my world starts changing..."

I need this, God's wisdom and to know Him more, really badly. The problem is that during most of the day, I don't have/feel any urgency. My attention's occupied, or I'm tired, or I'm just distracted. I've started to repeat verses like "Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you" and "Arise, shine, for your light has come..." throughout the day.

I have a little more than a chapter left of 1 Corinthians:)

message 27: by Elijah (new)

Elijah Z. (elijah6734) | 79 comments I feel the same way. What I need the most is a sense of urgency, something to propel me forward. Oftentimes I find myself preoccupied with frivolous activities and vain thoughts, and I don't spend as much time as I should on my responsibilities or daily devotions. As a result, my life gradually lose purpose, and the fervor I once had for my Lord gradually dampen.

I just finished reading 1 Corinthians chapter 9, and here's a verse that called out to me: "I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway." Maybe everyone, especially Christians, should all have a specific goal or ambition in life. That way, even though distractions or obstacles may come our way, we can still stand firm and walk steadfastly. Most of the time I know the world we currently live in is only a temporary abode and that I should live to please God, yet I sometimes find it hard to implement that realization into my life. I take pains to please myself while disregarding the responsibilities God gave me. It's a lesson I'm trying to learn. I must live for my Lord and not for myself.

message 28: by Catherine (semi active) (last edited May 02, 2024 08:32AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Catherine (semi active) | 3067 comments Yessss. I second that. My brain wanders so much :(

I really like that translation. What you said about having a specific goal or ambition in life made me think of spiritual gifts. Paul also talks a lot about those later, I think. I still have much to learn about what mine are, and I'm praying that God would work in and through me. That's a lesson I think all of us need to learn and are continuing to learn, no matter how long we've been a Christian. Thank you for sharing:)

Catherine (semi active) | 3067 comments I finished 1 Corinthians yesterday. My favorite verse was probably 1 Corinthians 4:7: "For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?"

message 30: by Elisabeth (Bets) (new)

Elisabeth (Bets) (livingforjesus) Whew. Just finished it. lol. I’m like, way late. 😂

“But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.””
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭5‬:‭11‬-‭13‬ ‭ESV‬‬

These verses struck me hard last night. I didn’t even realize they existed. They’re so harsh

Catherine (semi active) | 3067 comments Haha no problem! I'm glad you finished it:)

I really like those verses. It makes a really, really good point. I'm thinking of a situation in which I would have said something different than what I said if I knew this verse...this is why I need to read my Bible more often XD Thank you for sharing!

That's true, about it being harsh. It's really hard to give the truth in love- to have a balance of truth and compassion. It's especially hard to do through writing.
