It’s time for the next Monthly Reading Wrap Up! This Month I Read…
In the Weeds by B.K. Borison-This was a companion story to Lovelight Farms, which I read in December. It takes place on the same Christmas Tree Farm, but this time in Spring, and centers around characters that appeared in Lovelight Farms. Beckett and Evie pretty much do everything they can to avoid telling each other how they really feel about each other. I still really enjoyed both characters though. They both grow and learn to express their feelings to each other. Very cute romance, but not as cute as Lovelight farms. I’m excited to read the rest of the companion novels though.
Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver- I enjoyed this book. Where it really shined was not in its environmental message, but in its message of change. The main character Dellarobia learns throughout the novel, but mostly about herself and how she, and those around her, must adapt to overcome the adversity in their lives. She starts the novel very unhappy with her lot in life just going through the motions. As she discovers the monarch butterflies roosting on her family's property and learns about them and how their behaviors are changing and being affected by climate change she seems to learn how to embrace the pain and the beauty of change. I thought the climate change story was well done and intertwined beautifully with Dellarobia’s story, but as I said earlier her story is where the novel truly shines.
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus- I listened to this book on Audio. It was pretty good. I really enjoyed the first several chapters of Elizabeth and Calvin falling in love. It was cute and funny and also made a few poignant points. Once Calvin died up until the last 5 or 6 chapters it lost me. Its more poignant points felt drowned in fantastical dreams and you really had to suspend disbelief. The characters also got a little more annoying, particularly Mad. I’m sorry but developmentally children of that age just don’t behave that way. Anyway, it got its stride back in the last chunk of the story and redeemed itself a good bit.
