A very strange one to my ears. I have heard of Ku Klux Klan and I understood the implications of portraying them as the monsters in this novel but my lack of knowledge of the era & place probably contributed to the fact that I found this one weird. For example, I just had to Google The Birth of A Nation which was a 1915 American silent epic drama film on the birth of the Ku Klux Klan. I believe the book could prove to be a lively discussion in bookclubs as there are a lot of inferences to be made. Also, as can be seen from the MPG, there is a mix of historical fiction, horror, science fiction, alternate history, which again prove difficult for me to reconcile while listening because I just wasn't sure where we at.
There was a lot of anger and fear, again understandable, and in the end, some slight hope along with a ton of courage. The narrator did quite well with tones of anger and so on however there was bits where it just sounded like she's reading poetry. It's to do with the cadence of her voice, I think, so that was another strange point to me.
