Susie | 1 comments Hi,

I am looking for a short story written in the 1960s or 1970s that focuses on a pregnant woman who is closely watched by her doctors. In the end the reader finds out that the doctors only care about keeping the child alive. The woman is an afterthought. It kind of reminds me of Atwood's Handmaid's Tale or Rosemary's Baby. I just don't remember the title or author. Did anyone read this before? Thanks! Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

"The Yellow Wallpaper"by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
It was written in 1885. It's similar.

While "The Yellow Wallpaper" is a great story, and I do suggest everyone reads it, I don't think that's the one OP is looking for. I don't remember any babies in it, although there is a woman being closely guarded by her doctor/husband and forced to stay in a room with yellow wallpaper.

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 270 comments Yes, it's clearly not the one OP is looking for - but there is a baby in it (offstage) - most people looking at it with modern eyes would say the woman is clearly suffering from postpartum depression/psychosis.
