A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle - 4* - My Review

I first read this book years ago but had little recollection of it, so I decided to re-read it. This is the first book in the Sherlock Holmes series, which introduces readers to Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson. Obviously, these two are great characters who have endured over time. They are well-drawn with all their attendant quirks and foibles. Sherlock always has a leg up on the police detectives of Scotland Yard and has almost miraculous deduction skills. The mystery itself takes a secondary role to the character development, and ranges from England in the first half to Utah Territory in the second. I found the first part more effective than the second, but it all comes together in the end. It was fun revisiting this work.
