Willie’s brother-in-law Marco Peña bilked him for lots of money, which he used for drugs and gambling. When Willie cut him off, he became threatening, so much that he took out a restraining order on him. Carmen and her family turned on Willie. How do you think this affected Willie? Is this probably typical of other athletes who come into this kind of money? Was Marco a potential suspect in your mind?

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments I think he took a look at what they really wanted from him: money. It gave him an excuse for his bad behavior. I've known a couple of star athletes and their families, and this is not what the core family was about. But I can definitely see this behavior from families who have nothing and suddenly they are related to someone with real wealth. Marco was a potential suspect, but that would be like killing the golden goose.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments I agree Anita.

It happens a lot. I saw an interview with Tony Dungy a few years ago. He said the leadership of professional sports teams needs to give money management or direction to the young men and women who come into so much money quickly.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments I read a romance book by Lori Foster, I think it was her, and they had a football team that did provide money management training. I thought that was a fantastic thing, even if it was fiction.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1808 comments I agree with Anita.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments I thought it could have even been the older brother, who was not restrained from visiting the wealthy family members. They all could have been greedy enough, if given the opportunity and means. What a shame.
