Jen K | 3143 comments Cairo 1912 is land that is taking back its dominance from the Europeans, adapting modernity and managing the Djinns and other magical beings that flooded the land earlier. Agent Fatma is from the more traditional upper Egypt (Luxor) but wears stylish zoot suits, bowlers and ties. She is also a top agent for the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities. When the English elite who is trying to broker for peace before a world war breaks out is found dead with a group of 20 other British men and 2 Egyptians, Agent Fatma has her hands full. First someone she has to deal with a new partner, Agent Hadia, when everyone knows she works alone and her maybe girlfriend is back with her own secrets and tie to the unexplained deaths.

Clark has created a really fascinating world of magic in 1912 Cairo. The history is quite interesting and well done descriptions of Egypt and it's relationship with the colonizing Europe but there is also magic, djinns and other fun stuff. The culprit sows discord as many are struggling and using social justice for their own cause. I really enjoyed the strong women leads, the history and world building. I want to read the prequels now and more in this universe.

Steeplechase: colonialism x 8; Crime x 26

I think I need to catch up on that one. I really enjoy the characters.

Theresa | 15499 comments It's a novella about 100 pages maybe? A nice afternoon escape.
